Philately began shortly after the issue of the One Penny Black in 1840. Before long, other European countries were issuing their own stamps. These included the first Ceres stamps, Leopold I stamps and stamps from the former German states... This new method of franking spread to the colonies, creating new surcharges and special cancellations. Philately soon invaded the whole world, offering collectors a multitude of possibilities to indulge their passion.
