Buyers paying platform fees for sellers

I just recently found out that buyers are now being charged the platform fees for sellers listings. I cannot believe that Delcampe has instituted this. This just boggles my mind. I have been purchasing on Delcampe for many years, and have been relatively satisfied with most of my transactions. I am just astonished that this is happening. Of course, it took me almost 2 months to find out that Delcampe had done this. I confess that I really don't read my emails as I feel that they would be mostly for buyers. And, it almost seems as if Delcampe was in a way hiding the fees on the second page. You have to click "more" and I basically found out by chance. All I can say is that I will not be able to purchase in the quantity that I used to. Having to have to pay the sellers fees makes the customer feel like they are being abused. My purchases will have to maybe, constitute 25% if not less of what I used to buy before on the site. Honestly, I almost don't want to purchase on Delcampe anymore due to their unfair practices. How Delcampe could have thought that this was a good idea is just beyond me.

I could not understand why the delcampe make these.

It might be easier for them to collect selling fees this way.

As a seller, I agree its very unfair to the buyer. Both the buyer and seller have fees now, the sellers have a shop fee
I don't buy anymore as my collections are as complete as I want them to be. Fees to me if buying would have put me off making purchases or indeed sent me looking for better value elsewhere.

Buyers and sellers have been paying commission on the same items for years, certainly at UK auctions, although I’m not sure about other countries, so this should comas no surprise.
That in itself gave rise to online auctions in order to cut costs and give a cheaper alternative to the traditional auction companies.
Now they are getting greedy in order to “Maintain” past and present profit margins at the expense of their users.
It will be interesting to see the future of Delcampe, personally I see it reducing drastically in size and becoming a niche marketplace, which isn’t good for all concerned.

I agree that this is going to hurt Delcampe in the long run. Not sure how I feel about this. I have been purchasing on this site for so long that I hate to see it declining. But on the other hand, they would have brought it on themselves. And, yes, it won't be good for any concerned. Personally, I will start looking elsewhere.

Yes, what Delcampe has done may cause quite a few problems. There's the possibility that buyers may get accustomed to the new charges in time and come back. I'm not sure what they were thinking in driving away their buyers.

Delcampe is not an auction house. Not even close! Auction houses lot and describe auction items to benefit the sellers.
They also package and ship items, collect fees and distribute money to sellers. I look at Delcampe as a retailer, just like any other seller on the web. As a retailer, it is suicide to charge buyers (customers) a fee to make a purchase. Tell me of
any other retailer anywhere in the world that charges a fee to buyers. The only exception I know of is Costco in North America...who charge an annual membership fee.

Perhaps Delcampe should reconsider their mass amount of other collectibles as a waste of money to maintain. Too many offerings with little or no interest to the stamp market. Wouldn't it be nice to have a market place for philatelic items only.

I am waiting to analize my sales over the next month or two...but I don't see a positive outlook as of today.

In my opinion it is an auction house as all my items require a bid to buy.
However, I never said it was a good idea for Delcampe to introduce this strategy, I agree with nearly everything you have written, and let’s see what the future brings. The main reason I sell on Delcampe is the quality of buyer who seem far more knowledgeable than those on other websites.

I would suggest that the main reason to sell on Delcampe is to make money. Knowledgeable buyers will not put food on your table, unless they buy! If the add on fees turn off the buyers....you know the answer.

Does anyone truly understand Delcampe's motivation behind this recent change? Are they having financial problems? Is this system easier for them to collect fees? Is it a money grab? All I can say is that buyers are needed to keep a site like this going. I feel bad for the sellers.

I have been on Delcampe so long that I had my favorites that I purchased from. I used to spend more than I should but now I find second guessing myself every time I see a postcard I want and putting off the purchase. I'm still buying but not as much.

Sebastian Delcampe mentioned in the latest Q and A on youtube Link (https) that they were indeed losing money.

Ebay switched to collection of fees at checkout a few years ago, but kept fees as a seller responsibility.

I can see 2 reasons for the change to buyer fees.

First is that they thought sellers would not agree to the huge increase themselves, so they went for this obfuscation.

Second is to remove the discount club+ previously had on item sales fees, leading to a even higher increase for larger sellers. Now that this is gone I won't be renewing to the new product.

    I agree
In my opinion Sebastien was wrong. He had to implement a payment system equal to eBay. Payments only to Delcampe via bank transfer, credit card, paypal.
Payment fee paid by the sellers (10% is fine, on ebay my clients pay 12% .....)
If Delcampe need cash flow, just make a rule that money is sent to sellers after 7/10/15 days
Furthermore, with this payment method Delcampe avoid all the scams that are carried out over the weekend by people who use photos of expensive items already sold and sell them at a reduced price, finding some buyers who do not notice the scam.

You are right, but KYC procedures are not so expensive. There is lot of API services with a very low cost (for another business I use one of these services with great satisfaction)

DAC 7 is just a list of customers and their sales one time per year and can be easly implementend with one week software development

Anti Money Laundering have a low impact on the D* business. Is not a bank or a financial instituion or a trading platform.

I agree with you that postal cost grows every few months

I also agree with you the fees increase is involved into the decline in sales, but on my opinion the solutions create by the D* staff is the opposite of what should have been done. At my end I have stopped any development in D* interface and I concentrate my programmers on others platforms with best performances in sales

Both of your examples are of people commiting criminal offences (tax fraud and money launderering). As a responsible business Delcampe should not want either as customers due to the business risk of supporting criminals

A private seller should not have a 'business scheme', if they have one they should be registering themselves as the professional they are, and offer the additional buyer protections that entails.

To get back to the topic of this thread, which is buyer's paying the platform fees, here is an example of my latest purchase from one of my regular sellers:-

    Purchases 15.41
    Shipping Fees 3.00
Total amount receivable by Seller 18.41
    Platform Costs 4.84
    Total cost to Buyer 23.25

In other words, over a 26% surcharge on the total value of my order, including postage. Without postage the Platform Fees represent over 31% Buyer's Commission on my order.

Sellers are going to have to be offering something I really want in future whilst this outrageous fleecing of buyers by Delcampe continues.

Postage cost can't be controlled is determined by carrier

Fees: on other sites buyer don't pay fees but obviously fees are included in the item price. Simply you don't see the amount.

As a marketing suggestion is better to include ALL cost into the item cost and DON'T specify every single cost (item price, buyer fee, shipping)
