Journaliste et écrivain, Georges Blond (1906-1989) a écrit ses récits sur la Guerre de 14 18 au tout début des années soixante. Il avait grandi au milieu des souvenirs et de la multitude de témoignages que la guerre de 14-18 avait suscités. Après la Seconde Guerre, si différente, le besoin se faisait sentir de synthétiser ce qui restait pour beaucoup une expérience intransmissible - un cataclysme qui avait provoqué plusieurs millions de morts en Europe.
Georges Blond avait rencontré les protagonistes, s'était plongé dans les archives, il était aussi romancier. Ses livres, par leur exactitude, leur concision, leur sens de l'épopée, par la rigueur de leur style aussi, sont devenus des classiques : ils racontent dans leur ampleur et leur humanité, tant du côté allemand que du côté français, depuis les bureaux d'état-major jusqu'à la boue immonde des tranchées, deux batailles symboles de la Première Guerre mondiale (LA MARNE et VERDUN).
