a motif of the first horse-drawn tram line – a car drawn by a horseThe first horse-drawn tram line in Vienna was opened in 1865, and was soon followed by further three tram systems. In 1868, several proposals for the establishment of tram lines in Brno were submitted to the city council for discussion. On 23 February 1869, the City of Brno was granted a licence by the Ministry of Commerce for the operation of the so-called American-type horse-drawn railway system, including seven intersecting track sections and three depots. The first track of the horse-drawn railway, starting from Kiosk (now the Moravian Square) alongside the Montenegrin road to the then separate town of Královo Pole (then called Kartouzy), began to be built in the spring of the same year. The contract between the tram operator and the city was closed not earlier than in August 1869, only a few days before the commencement of operations. The operation of the horse-drawn railway in Brno was started on 17 August 1869, using mostly a “standard” single-track railway. The fee for one ride was 15 Kreuzer, or 7.5 Kreuzer for a child aged less than 10 years. The tracks were made of longitudinal wooden beams, which were made of iron bars with grooves. The beams were supported by transverse wooden sleepers.
