New system: status at 10:20 (Paris time)

    Over the past 12 months I've seen two other web sites undergo similar 'refurbishments' to the 'look and feel' of their software - namely Skrill and Constant Contact. They are probably all using the same development tools as they are all making the same mistakes! They seem to think that breaking the data down into smaller portions is best and faster - take a look (when the system recovers) at all the new tabs. This actually slows things down having to look in different areas to complete tasks! In fact what happens is that functions and ease of use that was in the old system disappear (usually forever) and the system is less 'fit for purpose' than it was before. It doesn't matter how much you complain there is never any going back ... and the web site is locked into the development by the development tool being used. It is a 'gotcha' all round.

    Why does noone ever talk to users of the system? Why do developers develop for elegance and not function / ease of use / need.

    In the examples I've mentioned both systems are slower to use and provide less function and are less intuitive now than they were 12 months ago. I expect Delcampe's latest enhancements will prove the same if they manage to iron out all the initial software and data problems they have created.

    You have to ask - who asked for these changes? There are surely more pressing areas of the system to be sorted out e.g. the discounting functions.

    Surely a system backup was undertaken before such a fundamental change was implemented? If so, why can't Delcampe revert to this ... and then work on getting their enhancements sorted out.

    Perhaps the Delcampe sellers who tested this system can put their hands up and explain what they actually did and why they think these changes are actually improvements.

    It is just another in a long line of enhancements that have gone pear shaped.

    I doubt if he'll be able to attend now ... he'll be needed to fix his system!
    If it isn't working then he's going to look pretty foolish! And it won't be working ... there were too many glitches when I tried it this morning.

    I wouldn't waste your time trying to speak to him ... he won't be listening ... you only have to recall the Bonus Card fiasco.

    You are making a big assumption that newer software and scripts run faster ... often as not they don't and they require more system resources. And anyhow so much depends on the system design and understanding of user requirements.

    In my 12+ years as a programmer and system designer I have never seen such an abysmal catalogue of disaster such as Delcampe present on a seemingly regular basis
    I often had to argue the cae for end-users who needed ease of operation and intuitive functionality over those whose main purpose in life was to create an 'elegant' (or words to that effect) solution to a perceived problem which in reality was of little or no consequence
    All my users (and us too) wanted was to be able to do their job quicker, more easily, and with greater flexibility than hitherto, or as IBM kept telling us: Work Smarter, Not Harder

    This latest change to Delcampe is worst ever. After the so-called sane-listing measures of last year which have driven away a lot of buyers and sellers from D, this latest UNSANE move will put a further nail in the self-destruction coffin of Delcampe! How sad.
    It just proves that success can really go to people's heads, by ignoring the signals of what clients really want.
    More buyers and sellers are now looking for alternatives, (and there are plenty around!) to satisfy their collection passion. :d-unhappy:

    This latest change to Delcampe is worst ever. After the so-called sane-listing measures of last year which have driven away a lot of buyers and sellers from D, this latest UNSANE move will put a further nail in the self-destruction coffin of Delcampe! How sad.
    It just proves that success can really go to people's heads, by ignoring the signals of what clients really want.
    More buyers and sellers are now looking for alternatives, (and there are plenty around!) to satisfy their collection passion. :d-unhappy:

    Regretably I agree.

    Sales are down and even for the ones that have come through I can't do anything.

    Seb only has himself to blame. I hope he apologises to all the buyers and sellers affected.
