cost of UK postage

Really concerns all collections but put it here cos its the one (with postcard's) that I regularly read. How about starting a petition to get the UK PO to allow pre-decimal stamps to be used like the French PO (at an agreed rate of exchange) or who do you write to? Only trouble is you'd have to cover envelope with stamps to get present day rates!
    What do you think?

Not sure it would work Dave. The conversion from Franc to Euro is much more recent than decimalisation so as you suggest you would need an enormous envelope to carry enough stamps which in turn would push you into the next weight band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It , IMHO, would never work due to the privatisation of our postal services. If the Post Office had its way it would demonetise earlier decimal issues as well. It is always looking for ways to kill the second hand postage trade where face value mint stamps are sold at a percentage of face. I refer to mint stamps with full gum not the 'gum wash' trade where used unfranked stamps are sold for postage.

Particularly I would imagine they would want to drop the early NVIs. When first issued 1st class cost 20p and is now 'worth' 85p. Europe 'E' rates are even more stark, initially c. 30p, now 'worth' £1.75. Add to that that 2nd hand decimal full gum stamps can be bought for 60-70% of face, then there is a significant saving if you want to shell out to buy a collection to break up. It depends on your usage, I would think.

    Sounds like a non-starter!
