Johannes Gutenberg - German type printing in Europe
Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg (c. 1398 –
February 3, 1468) was a German goldsmith and inventor credited with
inventing movable type printing in Europe (ca. 1450). His major
work, the Gutenberg Bible, also known as the 42-line bible, has
been acclaimed for its high aesthetic and technical quality. Among
Gutenberg´s specific contributions were the design of movable type,
the invention of a process for making such type in quantity (mass
production), the use of oil-based ink, and the use of a wooden
printing press similar to the screw olive and wine presses of the
period. His truly epochal invention was the combination of these
elements into a practical system. Gutenberg may have been familiar
with printing; it is claimed that he had worked on copper
engravings with an artist known as the Master of the Playing Cards.
Gutenberg´s method for making type is traditionally considered to
have included a type metal alloy and a hand mould for casting type.
The use of movable type was a marked improvement on the handwritten
manuscript, which was the existing method of book production in
Europe, and upon woodblock printing, and revolutionized European
book-making. Gutenberg´s printing technology spread rapidly
throughout Europe and is considered a key factor in the European
Renaissance. Gutenberg remains a towering figure in the popular
image; in 1999, the A&E Network ranked Gutenberg #1 on their
"People of the Millennium" countdown, and in 1997, Time–Life
magazine picked Gutenberg´s invention as the most important of the
second millennium
Guy de Maupassant - French writer
Henri Rene Albert Guy de Maupassant - (5 August 1850 – 6
July 1893) was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of
the fathers of the modern short story. His stories often denote the
futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it -
many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s. His short
stories are characterized by their economy of style and the
efficient way in which the various threads are neatly resolved. He
also wrote six novels.
Johann Sebastian Bach - German composer
Johann Sebastian Bach - (21 March 1685 O.S. – 28 July 1750
N.S.) was a prolific German composer and keyboard virtuoso whose
sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments
drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to
its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he
enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal
technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the
smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and
textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. He is regarded
as one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their
intellectual depth and technical and artistic beauty, JS Bach´s
works include the Brandenburg concerti, the Goldberg Variations,
the keyboard Suites, das Wohltempierte Klavier, Partitas, the Mass
in B Minor, the St Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art
of Fugue, and more than 200 cantatas.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery - French writer and aviator.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery - (June 29, 1900 – presumably
July 31, 1944) was a French writer and aviator. One of his most
famous works is Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince). He disappeared
on the night of July 31, 1944 while flying on a mission to collect
data on German troop movements.
