NATIONAL COSTUMES Bela Krajina
The depiction on the stamp shows the wedding-festive costume from Poljanska dolina ob Kolpi in Bela Krajina from the ? rst half of the 19th century. Depicted are three nuptial persons; namely, the leader of the nuptial procession or standard-bearer (»ensign«), the bride and supposedly the bridesmaid. One of 48 watercolour paintings of costumes, painted in 1838 by the painter F. K. Goldenstein for the collection of Emil Korytka »Słowianśćyzna«, represents the basis of the depicted motive. The painter depicted all major costume types as well as some local varieties; they are being archived in the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum in Ljubljana. In 1844, twelve costume motives, among them also the wedding costume from Poljanska dolina, were adapted for press and later also published (L. Kordeš) in the newspaper Carniolia.
Despite the festive appearance and colourful clothing (for instance, blue women’s jacket, clothing of the standard-bearer), white linen clothing prevails. Namely, such clothing was typical for the everyday and festive appearance of inhabitants of Bela Krajina; to a smaller extent, also in the period between both world wars. One of the explanations for the origin of the name Bela Krajina also appeared in connection to this; however, it remained on a hypothetical level.
