Folk costume from the valleys of Pesnica and
Ščavnica
Winterly dressed country couple, pictured in the central motive of
the stamp, is classified among the portraits of folk costumes
between the rivers Mura and Drava from the first half of the 19th
century. The influences of the Alpine and Pannonian dress area
didn´t only come together in this region, but have blended with
each other. Therefore, we can notice similarities in some pieces of
clothing with the synchronic Central-European folk costumes, while
in other cases similarities with the folk costumes from Eastern and
South-Eastern European countries. Reports of district lords and
descriptions of travel writers of the time mention that the men and
women of Pesnica and Ščavnica valleys used to wear
black fur. Mentioned are also top garments out of rough white cloth
with red trimmings, among them jackets and coats (kepenjeki or
gabani); Hungarians and Croats used the same, which is also,
according to some sources, where these garments originate from.
Beside the common use of hats, the inhabitants of Pesnica valley
were also in favour of winter fur coverings (fur caps). Sources
also confirm the use of large flaxen kerchiefs or sheets over other
top garments for women, as well as covering the head with a white
kerchief (peča) over garments underneath (pocilice). The
portrait shows also the use of wide linen trousers (berguše,
breguše, also bize or behete) underneath men´s upper
garments, which were shorter in Pesnica, and longer in
Ščavnica and other surroundings. Underneath the woman´s
fur a folded skirt (janjka) with trimmings of different colour is
visible. The leather boots (črevli) were the most common
winter footwear for both men and women. The handmade watercolour
painting of an unknown illustrator belongs to Kortytko´s collection
of folk costume Słowianśćyzna (št. 67), which
also contains portraits of F. K. von Goldenstein from 1838. The
collection is kept in the Slovenian ethnographic museum in
Ljubljana.
