Mahatma Gandhi, full name Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was born in Porbandar in 1869. His father was the chief minister in one of the many small Indian principalities. At the age of thirteen, Gandhi was married to an equally old girl named Kasturbai. The 18-year-old Gandhi decided to go to England to study law. Gandhi made a lot of effort to become an English gentleman. He walked, ate moderately, and reduced his needs to the necessary subsistence minimum. He returned to India as a graduate lawyer, and began fighting for better living conditions for Indians who had virtually no rights there. Gandhi, newly called Mahatma, issued a manifesto asking for Indian independence. He began criticising modern exploitation of one country by another. In March 1930, Gandhi crossed a distance of four hundred kilometres to take a pinch of sea salt at the end of the march, symbolically breaking the British salt monopoly. The journey lasted twenty-four days, and Gandhi was 60 years old at the time. In 1942, he began demanding immediate independence for India. In 1945, Labour came to power in England, and the new Prime Minister then instructed the Viceroy to secure freedom for India. But the situation became unexpectedly complicated when Muslims living in India demanded their own state. Everything stood against the division of British India into two separate states, Muslim and “non-Muslim.” The negotiations during which Muslims demanded the establishment of a separate Muslim state, Pakistan, were very difficult. Gandhi stood aside from the political affairs. Eventually, two countries were created on 15 August 1947: India and Pakistan. Neither was Gandhi’s India. On 30 January 1948, Gandhi came out of the house and walked through the garden. Hindu extremist Nathuram Ghodse stepped towards him to touch his legs reverently. Mahatma clasped his hands and smiled. Nathura, Ghodse pulled out a small revolver and fired three bullets. Gandhi collapsed to the ground. Mahatma Gandhi died on 30 January 1948.
