the building of the National Museum with the statue Čechie
The National Museum is the largest Czech museum. It is the central state-operated museum with a collection building, scientific, education and methodological function. It is intended to further develop the national identity as well as the awareness about belonging to the broader European and global community and culture. The museum consists of five institutions - the Natural Museum, the Historical Museum, the National Museum’s Library, Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures (since 1932), and Czech Museum of Music (since 1984), and two operational and technical departments (Economic Operations Department and Central Collection Building and Exhibition Activities Department). Like in the rest of Europe, the history of National Museum started with donations of large private collections, dedicated mostly to natural science, by local aristocrats. A group of liberal aristocrats, led by Count Kaspar Maria Sternberg, also led an effort to set up a museum. Their declaration of 15 April 1818 calling for the establishment of a museum and its further support secured the approval by the Austrian government and monarch in 1820. The newly established Czech Patriotic Museum Society became the owner and custodian of the collections and organiser of all museum activities. It remained the museum owner until 1934 when the ownership and custody of the museum collections were transferred to the Czech land government. In 1949, the Czechoslovak state became the owner of the museum.
