    Each QR code identifies its stamp uniquely - embedded in its data string is a unique serial number. Eventually, use of these codes will form part of Royal Mail's anti-forgery campaign.

    The QR codes have already appeared on 2nd class Machins. In order that the code is not obscured, postmarks have moved to 3 wavy lines rather than the previous 7 or 9.

    In Germany, postmarks have switched to blue for the same reason.

    Royal Mail has a MASSIVE problem with forgeries. Many of the changes introduced in recent years have been attempts to keep one step ahead of the forgers, elliptical perforations and the wavy "Royal Mail" overlay to name just two.

    I have just counted almost 60 lots of forged Machins on ebay. Gold, red, diamond jubilee and "long to reign" 1st class Machins, 2nd class, several Christmas(1st and 2nd) and olympic definitives have all been forged and it is said that in some parts of the country if you buy a book of stamps from a corner shop it is almost bound to be a forgery.

    Surely this is aimed at those (in UK) who use unfranked stamps! But then again surely there is so much extra post at Xmas that it will be impossible to check them all! But again its really a problem for next year or the year after when these stamps have been in use for a while. With postage approaching a £1 even more of an incentive to give to charity and NOT send Xmas cards!

    I've just come across a French stamp with one of these QR codes on, is it Royal Mails plan to STOP postmarking mail and just to read these codes?

    In the longer term, quite possibly, as the QR coded stamps are supposed to be no use after the 1st usage in that the unique code will be seen as used, but given that part of the problem in the last few years is that Royal Mail haven't been postmarking stamps anyway, thus assisting the rise in the re-use of stamps, to some extent they only have themselves to blame.

    I understand that the main reason for this is to stop the forgery of definitives which, by all accounts, is rampant. Special or commemorative stamps are not included because it's not worth the forger's while trying to copy them, and apart from a few collectors and dealers using up stock for postage, when do you ever see commems anyway?

    I would imagine you are correct about the French stamp, but perhaps that wasn't the purpose. I note it is printed from Mon timbrenLigne, 'my online stamp' which means it could be just something someone has produced from their home PC via the La Poste website and the QR code is unnecessary
