Saddo that I am I have spent all summer following the tree surgeons around gathering up all the logs they don't take away. I've now got a 6ft x 4ft shed full of split logs ready for winter, plus three tree trunks they felled in the caravan park which can't be recovered until it closes in November - I've been bribing the warden with home-grown veggies so he's going to tip me the wink when the pitches are empty and I can get in there and liberate them

We got loads of logs, but I just fencied putting the laurel on. As far as not working too hard is concerned, I'll send you a message, if only to vent my frustration.
Rest of theweek should be fun though. Got a nice walk planned for tomorrow, followed by visitors, village show on Monday and a daytrip on Tuesday. Wednesday is packing up and drive back.
Btw, we had an awful journey. It took us 6 hours this time. Most of the delay was due to the fact that a lorry had caught fire on a stretch of dual carriage way close to home. It took me 1.5 hours to do 18 miles. I'd just committed myself to the dual carriage way when we came to a halt - if I'd known I could have very easily avoided it.

Oh, the pleasure of motoring - I've had that kind of thing happen to me, too. Now I make sure I leave home with a full tank and an empty bladder - whenever there's a tail-back on the motorway sod's law says it'll be where the service area is, so there's no way I'm pulling off and trying to rejoin!

I must say the very first services were a very welcome event, even though I've never entertained them before and probably (hopefully) never will again. Good thing you mentioned the full tank - must make sure I fill up next time I use the car.

Mine holds twenty gallons - good range but painful when you come to pay!

Ouch, that sounds very painful.
I find it bad enough with my little Fiesta nowadays.

Well, I am back home and glad to say that the return journey was a lot easier - probably the only thing that has been good about this trip. Outbound journey and our stay there seems to have been one long string of disasters, including a limping hubby after he had a nasty fall.

Bill - Been trying to work out what it is similar to over here - too stylish for a Ford Galaxy and looks something like a Range Rover Sport - my next set of wheels when I get rid of the Discovery (I hope and dream...). The trouble with a posh off-roader is you can't really use it for carting logs and muddy dogs around - they play havoc with the cream leather upholstery

Marianne - glad to hear your home safe and well; your email made me feel quite sad but I hope things turn out OK for you - what did OH do to injure himself?

OH has a 4 x 4 Audi at the moment and I got a Fiesta.
My car will be passed on to son as a graduation present in 2 years time and we are thinking about a Nissan Juke as a replacement. When OH retires we want to go down to one car, but we are going to need the 4x4 for Devon.
Your comment reminds me of the lady farmer who rents some of our fields. She recently got a new pick-up, but would have like a car instead. Comment from her hubby was: "don't be stupid, how are you going to take a dead lamb to the incinerator in a car?"
As far as I am concerned a vehicle is a "tool" and has to be practical for your own personal needs - forget about "status symbols". BIL has a Jag, but won't take it on holiday if they are going to places like Lake District, Devon, Somerset, because of narrow roads, won't use it to do the weekly shopping, because it's too big to get into a supermarket parking space. Given that he doesn't need a car for work (he commutes by train), what is it used for other then to show a Jag on the drive of the house?

We got everything sorted over there, but this trip was supposed to be a leisure trip rather then a working trip. During our week we had a 2 hour local walk and half a day at a NT place - the rest of the time we've been working again. SIL has something to answer for and not for the first time. OH tripped and landed very heavily on a "block" of granite. He can walk on the flat now, but still has trouble with stairs or walking up/down hill. I just hope he makes a full recovery, because I have a shattered knee as a result of a fall last autumn and I know just how frustrating it is not to be able to do things like stepping onto/off things or walking on fairly steep gradients.
