Bogus issues and labels

    An interesting development on Delcampe:-

    Link (http)

I have been very irritated by bogus labels supposedly from Batum - that have never been anywhere near the place - flooding this category. I'm not sure if they still are as I have not looked for some considerable time! At the time I had some genuine British Occupation of Batum stamps that I was going to list until I saw the page apon page of bogus/illegal/fantasy issues - instead i sold elswhere.

For me and, I am sure, others a significant step in the right direction.

Yes - I will offer my services as since my semi retirement I do have a little more spare time for such services. In my opinion these often gaudy pieces of paper have done Delcampe much disservice as they have usually purported and insinuated they originated from a genuine stamp issuing entity - in most cases this could not be further from the truth and have been produced to mislead and cheat the unwary. I have no problems with these items if they are described and categorised correctly - which appears to be the whole point of the new revisions.

Good luck to both of you.

I'll stay well clear, as I have no idea what to look for.

Going back to the issues of Batum - there are 10 pages of these on Delcampe:

    Link (http) ;

Out of the more than 900 listings probably no more than 10 are genuine items from that place. The rest are all labels that have never had and never will have any postal validity and probably have never been within 100 miles of that place.

There are quite a few more 'entities' that are in the same position - flooded out with fake and bogus issues masquerading as genuine. Those that manufacture these issues will have to find new venues to peddle their rubbish once they are properly categorised for what they are.

Most of the Nagorno Karabakh issues listed on Delcampe are fakes - at some very extravagant prices too. There are many, many more and I do not have the time to list them but I am sure most other stamp collectors will have come across some of these issues - many probably deceived into paying good money for rubbish!

Perhaps delcampe could provide a member-prepared area where common forgeries/fakes etc could be described and illustrated, n order to show some of the commonest forgeries, for example Japanese cherry blossoms, early Paraguay etc. there are 1000's of forgeries where easy telltales can be shown in order to allow less experienced collectors to compare. I had a similar page with around 100 common forgeries illustrated on the myphilately site before it closed down

Good idea Bob, but remember that not everyone will have the knowledge, experience or presence of mind to even think that stamps may be fake or bogus

I came across 'stamps' of Buriatia when I was collecting thematics; I put them in the display clearly written up as bogus issues - if nothing else it scores a few points for 'philatelic knowledge' when exhibiting!

I think this is why Delcampe ask for volunteer moderators as the task of removing all the illegal issues is a big one. There is also the big problem of so called fantasy labels, local issues and pure fake items listed.

This is why Philippe asks for the item numbers so they can be checked and then removed. For only one or two people to do this is a very big task. The more who report these items makes the task of regulating them easier.

The Delcampe team is quite small and there are "only so many hours in a day".
All I can say to you is that you report the fakes and/or prefarably sellers who have many fakes up for sale.

To the contrary - in my experience their responses are very good, but they have to prioritize and sometimes they cannot deal immediately with certain issues.

Hopefully, one of the moderators who deals with fakes/bogus issues may notice this and will get in touch with you.

    Dear Kotiec,

We are aware that there are many fakes, fantasy labels, etc.. on the website. We are trying our very best to enforce the rules concerning these items, but since there are so many of them, it takes some time. As has already been suggested, I advise you to make use of the "Report item" link found on each item page to report any fakes and fantasy labels to us. Doing this will enable us to act faster. Your reports may not get treated the same day, but I assure you that they will get treated. We do care.

    Kind regards,

    Dimitri from the Delcampe Team
