Hold the stamp up to a good light source so the light reflects off the stamp at about 5 degrees - you should see the phosphor bands as one or two dull strips against the shinier ink surface

This is a rough-and-ready method and works better with some phospor/ink combinations than others, also some bands are more pronounced than others, especially if the stamp has been used and soaked off paper

It could be the phosphor used in the bands reacts to a different UV wavelength from the phosphorised paper

Have you tried switching between long wave and short wave?

Machin stamps were introduced in 1967 and based on a plaster bas-relief by Arnold Machin, hence the term 'Machin heads'

Prior to this stamps used a portrait by photographer Dorothy Wilding, and are generally referred to as 'Wildings'
