Hi I am listing 100s of French postcards

Am I right that the French abbreviation CPM means real photo? Can someone translate CPM???

Are there any other useful descriptive common phrases for selling postcards such as the word for stamp cancel ??? or slogan cancel???

My French at school was very good but I have forgotton a lot!

    Thanks Plumpostcards

I can't help you there, but am looking forward to any answers to this thread. I currently put all that sort of info in English rather than in French.

I know when listing on International + UK it says 'please use English' but I know many people put other languages as well

This helps non English speakers or does this information get translated when they sign in internationally from other countries??

Unfortunately many of my French cards are in French and I cannot translate some words into English so I still write the description as it appears on card and then put France and the region

Then there is the problem if I write the French description I do not fully understand then English many speaking people cannot search for the items easily as they type English words.

Of course it is more likely a French speaking person will buy a French card but not always many foreigners love France!

I try to list in English if a topographical French card like for brewery the word Brewing etc but this is not always possible if my French is not good enough!

I think it comes down to personal choice - my preference is to use whatever is written on the card as the title (as long as it uses the Roman alphabet) hence Vue General, etc., but the actual description (printing type/condition/usage) in English as required by the site

If you want to write French descriptions then list it on the French site, ditto German, Italian, and so on

It actually says to list both title and description in English when you are listing it!!

At the moment I to am using a bit of both.

Not to be insulting though I think more French people speak good English than vice versa.

Not many where it comes to common cards, but I do get the sales when I get less common ones - I suppose the same applies for UK or any other country as well.

What price do you apply to those real photo black and white (50s I think) crinkly edge ones? The thing is they are quite nice but there may be millions on delcampe.fr

    Examples unshown all unused.

    Thanks PP

Sizing may be comparable to the English classification of "Standard" (i.e. 13.5 x 8.5 cm equivalent) or "Modern" (A6 or 15 x 10.5)

The same applies for all topographical cards.
If you list common "tourist" cards, expect to have a long wait - find a nice animated card of a small town/village and it will fly of the shelves.

Unfortunately, in our search for good cards, we all end up with the common stuff as well.

Tbh, I have now so much of the common stuff (listed and unlisted) that I've taken the decision to only buy new stock if at least 50% or more of a joblot will guarantee a quick sale. Actually got some bits and pieces tonight, which include a nice selection of Swiss and Irish cards and a quantity of actresses - am looking forward to listing them over the next few weeks.

So far I have not done that; at least not a real life auction.
Every now and again I make up some batches of single county/country/topic and list them on Ebay (let that be a warning to anyone looking for joblots to sell here as individual cards, not to buy from me over there!!). Given what large lots of common cards sell for in auction houses, that gives me a better return.

I think sometimes people on Ebay buying are either small part time dealers or simply collectors looking for cards to sort through.

You can get quite lucky in big lots. Once I found some Italian cards (street scenes) worth £25+ about 10 of them this more than paid for the lot. But this is more likely if the person is not a dealer or does not deal in foreign cards. Many people selling the foreign job lots are not dealers in that area so there is an opportunity there....

I notice some people sell job lots here and they sometimes do very well!

The last time I ended up with a shoebox full of modern 'holiday' postcards (as as result of my mixed lot buying) I gave the whole lot to our local junior school to make a collage with

They were happy, I was happy. Job done.
