Die vorliegende Sondermarke, die anlässlich des 100-Jahr-Jubiläums des österreichischen Fußballklubs „Austria Wien“ erscheint, zeigt in ihrem attraktiv gestalteten Motiv neben dem Vereinsemblem Porträtfotos der vier Ehrenkapitäne Luigi Hussak, Walter Nausch, Ernst Fiala und Herbert Prohaska.
Die „Veilchen“, wie die Austria nach ihren Vereinsfarben liebevoll genannt wird, sind seit 1973 in Wien-Favoriten beheimatet, die Anfänge des Klubs reichen freilich bis ins Jahr 1911 zurück, als von den ehemaligen Spielern des „Vienna Cricket and Football-Clubs“ der „Wiener Amateur-Sportverein“ gegründet wurde. Ihren heutigen Namen trägt die Austria, nach erfolgter Professionalisierung des Spielbetriebes, seit 18. November 1926. Als 23-facher österreichischer Meister und 27-facher ÖFB-Cupsieger gehört der FK Austria Wien zweifellos zu den erfolgreichsten heimischen Fußballklubs. Als größte internationale Triumphe gelten die Siege im „Mitropa-Pokal“ in den Dreißigerjahren, das Erreichen des Finales im Europacup der Cupsieger 1978 sowie die beiden Halbfinalspiele im Europacup der Landesmeister 1979 und im Europacup der Cupsieger 1983.
Nach schwierigen Zeiten während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und wechselvollen Jahren danach begann erst unter dem unvergesslichen Joschi Walter ein langsamer Neuaufbau des Vereins. Der Aufschwung der Siebzigerjahre ist ohne Frage mit dem Durchbruch der jungen Talente Herbert Prohaska, Erich Obermayer und Felix Gasselich verbunden. Nach dem Cupsieg 1974 konnte in der Spielsaison 1975/76 der bis dahin dominierende Verein „SSW Innsbruck“ überraschend in der Meisterschaft besiegt werden. Nachdem der Klub im Jahr danach zwar wieder hinter Innsbruck zurückfiel, andererseits jedoch abermals den Cup gewann, wurden die Weichen neu gestellt. Mit den Austria Tabakwerken konnte ein Sponsorvertrag abgeschlossen werden, der die wirtschaftlichen Grundlagen des Vereins längerfristig sicherte. Nach einem neuerlichen sportlichen „Durchhänger“, der in den Neunzigerjahren den „Ausverkauf der Stars“ zum geflügelten Wort machte, wurde 1999 mit Magna unter dem austrokanadischen Multimillionär Frank Stronach die finanzielle Situation buchstäblich auf „neue Beine“ gestellt. In der Saison 2002/03 stellte sich mit dem ersten Meistertitel seit zehn Jahren und dem Cupsieg der langersehnte Erfolg wieder ein.
Die „FK Austria Wien AG“ besteht seit dem 1. Juli 2008, der Vereinsname wurde nach vielen internen Unruhen und dem letztlich erfolgten Ausstieg Stronachs wieder auf „FK Austria Wien“ geändert. In der vergangenen Saison spielten die „Violetten“ immerhin wieder in der Qualifikationsrunde der UEFA Europa League – und sie wurden, nur einen Punkt hinter Red Bull Salzburg, österreichischer Vizemeister.
Zahlreiche bekannte Fußball-Persönlichkeiten wie Ernst Ocwirk, Matthias Sindelar, Ernst Nemec, Robert Sara, Franz Wohlfahrt, Toni Polster und die eingangs erwähnten Ehrenkapitäne trugen während ihrer glanzvollen Sportlerkarrieren den traditionellen violetten Dress.
Der Fußballklub Austria (lat. Österreich) Wien ist ein österreichischer Fußballverein aus Wien. Der Klub spielt in der Bundesliga. Die zweite Mannschaft des Vereins spielt in der Regionalliga Ost, der dritthöchsten Spielstufe Österreichs. Bislang wurde die Austria 23 Mal österreichischer Meister und 27 Mal ÖFB-Cupsieger. Größte internationale Erfolge waren die Siege im Mitropapokal 1933 und 1936, das erreichen des Finales im Europacup der Cupsieger 1978 sowie der Halbfinale im Europacup der Landesmeister 1979 und im Europacup der Cupsieger 1983. Die „Veilchen“, wie die Austria nach ihren Vereinsfarben genannt wird, wurden am 29. Oktober 1910 von ehemaligen Spielern des Vienna Cricket and Football-Club als Wiener Amateur-Sportverein (WAS) gegründet und firmieren in vielen jene Zeit betreffenden Listen als Amateure. Am 16. November 1910 erfolgte die Aufnahme in den ÖFV. Seit Gründung der österreichischen Fußballmeisterschaft am 5. Juli 1911 ist die Austria ohne Unterbrechung in der höchsten Liga, was sonst nur noch der Lokalrivale SK Rapid Wien geschafft hat. Seinen heutigen Namen nahm der Verein am 18. November 1926 nach der Professionalisierung des Spielbetriebes an. Ursprünglich aus dem Hietzinger Stadtteil Ober Sankt Veit stammend, verlor der Klub 1930 aus finanziellen Gründen sein Heimstadion. Nach mehreren wechselnden Heimstätten trägt die Wiener Austria ihre Heimspiel seit 1973 in der „Generali Arena“ am Laaer Berg im Bezirk Favoriten aus Die Abkürzung FAK stammt aus der an das WAS-Emblem angelehnten Buchstabenanordnung im Austria-Emblem
