Mit der neuen Sondermarke „100 Jahre Wechselbahn“ findet eine der beliebtesten österreichischen Markenserien („Eisenbahnen“) ihre attraktive Fortsetzung; die Gestaltung des Motivs – es zeigt eine historische Lokomotive aus der k. k. StB Reihe 199 – stammt vom bewährten Künstlerduo Peter Sinawehl (Entwurf) und Prof. Gerhart Schmirl (Stich).
Die Wechselbahn, am 12. Oktober 1910 feierlich eröffnet, verbindet die beiden Orte Aspang-Markt in Niederösterreich und Friedberg in der Steiermark; ihren Namen erhielt sie freilich, weil sie auf ihrer Strecke den mächtigen Gebirgszug des Wechsels mit einem fast 2,5 Kilometer langen Wasserscheidetunnel, welcher den großen Hartberg durchbricht, unterfährt. Zwischen den Wasserläufen des Taucher- und des Pinkabachs wird der Hochfeldrücken mit einem weiteren, knapp über 1.200 Meter langen Tunnel durchstoßen. Die Summe der erstiegenen Höhen von Aspang bis Hartberg beläuft sich auf etwa 200 Meter, in umgekehrter Richtung auf 346 Meter. Die Wechselbahn verbindet die Aspangbahn sowohl mit der Thermenbahn (von Friedberg nach Fehring) als auch mit der Pinkatalbahn (von Friedberg nach Oberwart).
Wie aufwändig und überaus gefährlich sich die Errichtung dieser Eisenbahnlinie gestaltete, belegen traurige Zahlen: 16 Arbeiter kamen während der mühsamen Bauarbeiten in den Jahren von 1907 bis 1910 ums Leben, und mehr als 1.600 Personen wurden zum Teil schwer verletzt. Ein weiteres Beispiel aus der im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes „dunklen Vergangenheit“ der Wechselbahn ist freilich die Tatsache, dass die Tunnel bei Mönichkirchen dem beweglichen Führerhauptquartier „Frühlingssturm“ vom 12. bis 25. April 1941 als Ort zur Leitung des Balkanfeldzuges dienten.
Seit Anfang 2005 werden auf der Wechselbahn-Strecke im Personenverkehr die Triebwagen ÖBB 5022 („Desiro“) von Siemens und VT 5047 eingesetzt, bei mit Lokomotiven bespannten Zügen – zum Großteil handelt es sich dabei um die so genannten „City-Shuttle-Garnituren“ – indes die Baureihe 2016 („Herkules“). Güterzüge sind meist ebenfalls mit diesem Typ bespannt. Davor, also bis 2005, fuhren auf der Strecke die VT 5047 und die VT 5147 sowie Lokomotiven der Reihen 2043 und 2143.
