The Amorebieta-Bermeo railway is a narrow gauge railway line that connects the Biscayan towns of Amorebieta and Bermeo in the Basque Country, Spain. It is currently integrated into the Euskal Trenbide Sarea network, belonging to the Basque Government, and is mainly used for suburban passenger transport, through Euskotren Trena line E4. The railway was popularly known by the name "Gernikatxu".1
The Amorebieta-Bermeo railway line has a length of 34.99 km and was formed by the union of three different sections; the Amorebieta-Guernica and Lumo section of 14.51 km in length inaugurated on August 4, 1888, the Guernica-Pedernales section of 9.48 km in length inaugurated on March 15, 1893 and the Pedernales-Bermeo section of 11 km long that was inaugurated on August 16, 1955. The Pedernales-Bermeo connection was previously covered with an animal-powered tram that was inaugurated on August 16, 1855.2

History
The first railway connection that existed in Busturialdea was the small animal-drawn tram that linked Bermeo with Pedernales through a track with a width of 750 mm and 11 km in length that was inaugurated on August 16, 1855. It had up to 16 caballerías and 9 passenger cars. On June 31, 1884, by order of the Ministry of Development, it was included in the General Railway Plan and the line from Guernica to Bermeo was declared general service, an inclusion made at the request of Francisco Rispa Perpiñá and Toribio Íscar Sáez.
In 1882 the narrow gauge railway line connecting Bilbao with the town of Durango was inaugurated. It was built and operated by the "Compañía del Ferrocarril Central de Vizcaya" which would later be integrated into Ferrocarriles Vascongados, one of its stations was that of the town of Amorebieta. In March of that same year, Francisco Rispa Zornoza was authorized to carry out the first studies on a railway line to link Amorebieta with Guernica and Lumo. Rispa later transferred the rights to it to the architect Luis Landeche.
Decree Law of February 20, 1885 for "the construction, without direct subsidy from the State, of an economic railway that starts in Amorebieta and ends in Guernica and Lumo" in favor of Luis de Landeche Urries who promotes the constitution of "Compañía del Ferrocarril de Amorebieta a Guernica y Lumo" which was established on June 17, 1885 and has the purpose of carrying out "the construction and operation of the railway that would link Guernica with the Vizcaya Central Railway line and therefore, with Bilbao." The project had been drafted in 1884 and was approved by the Ministry of Public Works on May 11, 1886 and granted to the "Amorebieta to Guernica and Luno Railway Company."
The railway line, made in metric gauge, has a 14.51 km route crossing the port of Autzagane through two tunnels, 26 and 148 meters long respectively, then folds into the bed of the Oka River. Two more tunnels, 31 and 14 meters, are located between Zugastieta and Muxika.
It has 4 stations and 2 stops. The stations are Amorebieta, Zugastieta, Muxika and Guernica. The stops are Amorebieta Geralekua and Lurgorri. It was inaugurated on August 4, 1888 and its operation began with trains, some direct to Bilbao and others that depart from Amorebieta. For this purpose, an agreement is made for the joint exploitation of the Amorebieta Bilbao section with the Vizcaya Central Railway Company.
On July 3, 1891, the "Amorebieta to Guernika and Luno Railway Company" obtained the concession for the construction and operation of the Guernica - Pedernales section with the power to continue it to Mundaca and Bermeo but without a state subsidy. This concession requires the construction of the section in a period of no more than 4 years, granting them 99 years for its exploitation. The railway is declared "of public utility."
On March 15, 1893, the 9.48 km of the section that connects Guernica with Perdernales came into service, making the line a total of 25 km in length and increasing the number of stations and stops. The tracks run along the left side of the Oka, now converted into an estuary. The Guernica Instituto, Forua, Murueta, Busturia San Cristóbal, Busturia Axpe and Pedernales stations were added, where it joined the Pedernales Bermeo animal-drawn tram.
In the initial project drawn up by Pablo Alzola in 1884, it was estimated that the railway would serve a population of about 42,333 people who could generate traffic of 117,426 travelers per year. It was also estimated that it would serve for the transport of merchandise, fishing from the ports of Bermeo, Elanchove and Lequeitio, iron from the Rigoitia mines (which never produced relevant production) and livestock, agricultural and forestry products.3

On March 22, 1882, the Civil Government of Vizcaya gave the green light to the request of Francisco Rispa Perpiñá to carry out technical studies for the construction of a railway line from Amorebieta to Guernica. The request made indicated the desire that said line could be extended to the port of Bermeo. Since he was unable to carry out the study in the year established by the legislation in force at the time, Rispa had to request an extension of six months, which was granted on April 6, 1883.
The project carried out by Rispa was acquired by the architect Luis de Landecho y Urries who obtained a license for, as the decree law of February 20, 1885 said, "the construction, without direct subsidy from the State, of an economic railway that departs in Amorebieta ends in Guernica-Luno" and that allowed the use of public land and the forced expropriation of those private lands that were needed for the laying of the railway line. The concession for the operation of the railway was 99 years.
On July 17, 1885, the "Amorebieta to Guernica and Luno Railway Company" was established in Bilbao before the notary Félix de Uríbarri. The company was created with an initial share capital of 1,250,000 pesetas divided into 2,500 shares of 500 pesetas each. The shares were distributed among different families and strong men from Vizcaya linked to the Bilbao bourgeoisie and power circles of the benefited towns, all of them very close to the conservative party. Only 50 shares remain at the disposal of the Board of Directors.

The construction
The engineer Pablo de Alzola was in charge of directing the works of laying the railway line. The architect Luis de Landecho participates alongside him, who is in charge of the design of the stations on the line.
