Le Retina I est le premier. Il fut construit en Allemagne, par Herr Doktor Nagel, à la demande de Kodak qui voulait ainsi vendre un concurrent "abordable" du Leica. Kodak fabrique depuis 1934, la cartouche 135, celle qui alimente encore la plupart des appareils d'aujourd'hui. Le nouvel appareil doit donc utiliser cette cartouche. Il est petit, très bien fabriqué (il est allemand !), facile à charger avec son dos qui s'ouvre sur charnière. La forme restera quasi inchangée jusqu'en 1954 avec l'apparition des IIc et IIIc.L'objectif est monté sur rampe hélicoïdale, mais l'appareil reste un folding, même si le soufflet est très petit.
