Alfred de Musset et George Sand se rencontrent en juin 1833.
Ils sont déjà l’un et l’autre des auteurs reconnus et dès cette première rencontre naît une profonde amitié, laquelle prendra alors très vite une dimension amoureuse.
Le rituel voyage sentimental en Italie dans les derniers jours de 1833 (Les amants de Venise) fut fatal à leur amour. ''Infidélité et maladie de l’amant, trahison de la maîtresse avec le médecin qui le soignait, fuite précipitée de l’amant, correspondance échevelée, réconciliation et ruptures exaltées sur fond d’alcool et de démence, comme l’écrit Le Robert des Grands écrivains , rien ne manqua au mélodrame joué par les amants de Venise et qui dura près de deux ans''.
Sand avait publié Elle et lui, récit mettant en lumière les raisons de sa rupture avec Musset. Deux ans après le décès de son frère, Alfred, Paul de Musset publie Lui et Elle, parodie du récit autobiographique de Sand qui visait à réhabiliter la mémore de son frère, pour le moins écorné dans l'ouvrage de celle-ci.
