Multiple listings

There is an interesting thread regarding Delcampe about this topic on another forum:

Now I know multiple listings are allowed when each item is different in some way - such as a different postmark for example. Are multiple items now allowed when each item is identical? What is to stop every user from listings hundreds of the same identical item if this is now allowed?

What does everyone else think particularly in light of server slowness problems and the like?

Thanks for the interesting read. The issue is really about one seller who with nearly 2 million listings here on Delcampe and elsewhere is able to list, just one example, 650 of the same same mint item. My question is why of the nearly 2 million listings are all of them "NEW"??? Fortunately this seller lists very common items at prices which are way over cat.

I have always been against the listing of large numbers of the same stamp. I hear the case that no two used stamps are the same because the postmark will be different but I have always advocated that there should be a limit of, perhaps, five of the same used stamp.

The main reason why I ceased selling on Delcampe was the imposition of the "sane" charge of a fixed sum per item sold. However, the swamping of Delcampe listing by sellers such as Poppe Stamps was another. Listing on this scale is unfair to all other sellers whose listings are much less visible.

I note that one buyer writing on the linked forum received the wrong stamp twice. I wonder whether this was a stamp which came in two or more watermark varieties.
Poppe Stamps uses the Simplified catalogue. Sometime ago he was listing the basic Irish definitives with the issue date of 1922. This is the date in SG Simplified but only applies to stamps with a "se" watermark. Those with a "e" watermark were issued in 1940. Just one example.

Personally I think that unless Delcampe take action over such duplication of the same item over and over again there will be many others (if there are not already) who will jump on the bandwagon and literally swamp the site with with masses of duplicated listings.

Years ago when I first listed on Delcampe I did duplicate listings of phonecards as I have a huge stock of these items. I was then told I could only do this if each scan was a different one. I'm not sure if this is the case with the dealer in question but it is a very easy matter to duplicate the same listing over and over again with the same scan. Later this changed so that each item listed had to be different in some way (such as different postmarks). It seems now that it is a free for all if the seller highlighted can list the way he is doing.

It would be very easy for me to swamp the phonecard listings with multiple listings of the same items as I have hundreds of thousands of cards. I'm sure others could do it in postcards, stamps or whatever until the servers can't cope with the volume any longer. But what is the point? The seller in question is surely on many collectors blocked lists as who wants to see the same item over and over again?

It will be interesting to see if Delcampe take any action over such listings or not. If not be prepared for a deluge of similar listings which will make the site most unappealing to the majority of collectors.

Sebastian has made it clear, on the site with the original link:-

    Link (http)

that multiple listings of the same item where there is no discernible difference are definitely not allowed.

There are going to be a few rather disgruntled sellers when the news starts to filter through to them!
