    I went to my local PO yesterday to send an item "International Signed For". They refused it, because it was to a PO Box. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

    I searched the RM website, but couldn't find anything.

    Potentially, this could be a big problem, as Paypal insists on "proof of delivery".

    Probably standard practice, since a post box can't sign for anything

    They can put a card in a POB though. If anything, you'd expect obtaining a signature from a POB holder would be easier than from a private address, given that the owner would have to come into the post office to collect his mail!

    In many countries delivery can only be to a PO Box.

    I would ring Royal Mail and ask them for clarification. Registered Mail is accepted overseas to PO Boxes - for example Kuwait delivery is only to PO boxes. There a card is put in the box and you take it to a counter then sign for the item. The same happens in Rwanda where I was recently.

    I have heard of this happening to others - so far I have not had to send anything recently ISF to a PO Box but if told I could not send I would most certainly challenge it and demand where in the PO regulations it states that or ask them to show me the change in the regulations that states ISF cannot be used to a foreign PO Box. If true half the world is out of bounds to this service.

    I would ring Royal Mail and ask them for clarification. Registered Mail is accepted overseas to PO Boxes - for example Kuwait delivery is only to PO boxes. There a card is put in the box and you take it to a counter then sign for the item. The same happens in Rwanda where I was recently.

    Probably the sub-postmaster/counter staff are making it up as they go along (again) - I'll ask at my local tomorrow since they're new so have probably recently read the regulations booklet!

    I used Airsure instead, which is slightly more expensive. It is tracked all the way, but doesn't obtain a signature at the other end. And of course it's only available to a limited number of countries, luckily the country I was sending to was included.

    An interesting link - this must be fairly new as I have not had problems in the past sending ISF to Po Boxes. The last one was to Lithuania about a month ago.

    I suppose the way around it is still to use the PO Box Number but also to have the street address as well.

    For example I have sent in the past to Israeli PO Boxes where the actual address was also given

    For example Mr. Israeli, 27 Shemona St, P.O. Box 33, Tel Aviv.

    Though how this would work in countries that have no mail deliveries at all - and there are very many countries that don't (the Gulf States for example) - is a moot point.

    It's possible that '27 Shemona Street' is the address of the sub-post office handling the boxes

    Many small Australian and Canadian towns don't even have the luxury of a sub-PO so all mail just goes into one office ('the' post office!)

    My Post Office have suggested using Airsure.
    However, I have not tested this method yet but I'm sure it'll arise soon enough.

    That's what they told me and it is what I used in the end.

    But airsure is restricted to just 35 countries, so what happens if you need to post something outside one of those countries? You can no longer sent an insured delivery, unless the buyer is prepared to give you their actual address.

    But airsure is restricted to just 35 countries, so what happens if you need to post something outside one of those countries? You can no longer sent an insured delivery, unless the buyer is prepared to give you their actual address.

    You will find many buyers in countries that use PO boxes do not have an actual address as we know it in the UK. Many of the streets have no names and buildings have no numbers. When I lived in Kuwait to give directions you had to use landmarks to direct people to where you lived. For example - take the first left past the green mosque, turn right by the Shwarma shop etc etc.

    100% of mail went to PO Boxes.

    Effectively Royal Mail has cut off shipping to quite a large part of the world. I'm not going to send valuable stuff unless I can send it signed for - too much ordinary mail goes missing to trust Royal Mail with valuable items that are likely to disappear with no likelihood of compensation. Or one has to stop taking Paypal and only send on the understanding the customer takes the loss should something go missing. It would simply be easier to stop shipping valuable stuff overseas to countries where the only postal address is a P.O. Box.

    I wonder when this new little gem of a regulation was introduced, why, when and by whom!

    I think all we can do is extend our terms & conditions to make it clear to potential buyers, that we won't send items over a certain value to PO Boxes.

    It's ludicrous on 2 accounts. Firstly I try to keep my t&c's as short as possible and secondly PO boxes are very often safer than actual physical addresses in countries with a dubious/irregular postal service.
