    That is just appalling. I thought that Royal Mail was a "price regulated monopoly".

    As from April, the cost of sending items to Asia (or America) will be £2 airmail or £7 registered.

    The comparable costs from here to UK are £1 airmail or £2.50 registered..And that is after postage costs here went up nearly 50% last year!

    Agreed Royal Mail is more efficient than our Philpost over here.... but not 2-3 times more efficient. Perhaps they use better airplanes?

    Yes, looks like you are right. When I was at business school in London back in the '60's. the dilemma of Royal Mail was called "the law of supply and demand". Nothing has changed.

    I see that the volume of their postal business has declined 25% in the last 5 years. .Hiking up the prices to a level that is;way out of kilter with practically everywhere else in the world should assist to accelerate the decline and put them back at square 1 in a year or two.....until privatisation when prices will be forced up again.

    Seriously, though, I do hope that your international trade is not damaged too much

    My reading of the Royal Mail website is that business post rises from 2nd April and ordinary private domestic rates from the 30th April - presumably to attempt to deflect some of the criticism for non-business customers, that they will effectively get 1 month's grace at the current rate, and business customers are paying a reduced tariff anyway.

    Personally, given all the hype about the rates, I'm almost surprised they haven't gone up more. Nobody likes to be paying more but the truth is that, in relation to their competitors, Royal Mail have been charging significantly less than other national mail carriers.

    A quick check this morning shows that Royal Mail is moving into perhaps a more 'even' situation in relation to some other countries. A 30 gm letter to Europe (probably my most common type mailing to Europe) will be 87p from 30th April. Current rates (from Euro converter) to UK from Germany, France and Netherlands for a similar weight item are 84p, £1.13 and 91p respectively (and that's not to say those won't rise), so really we're not any worse off than our near neighbours, although some of the rates for larger heavier items do appear to have gone up considerably in some cases.

    Interestingly International Signed for rate is only going up 20p, or less than 5% and the insurance charge by only 10p, 2.5%.

    Basic rate postage to Europe is going up 19p (for up to 40gm) - will this really put off a lot of people from getting the postcard, stamp or whatever they they want or need for their collection? - I honestly don't believe so.

    None of us like to have to charge more, but UK is in no different position that anywhere else in the world. Worldwide postal authorities are talking about the declines in mail volumes and the need to increase rates to compensate (USPS lost some $4 billion last year!). Let's just take a deep breath and get on with it!!!

    None of us like to have to charge more, but UK is in no different position that anywhere else in the world.     I totally accept that it's going to vary depending on what you're selling, but it's always the case that 'foreign' rates are higher, no matter which country you're in, so whilst I agree that it would make you potentally uncompetitive in relation to say a French buyer buying from a French rather than a British seller, it will be no different for a buyer in any other country to buy from a French rather than a British seller. They are still going to pay a higher postage rate than for a domestic customer, in the same way as undoubtedly you can charge less for postage to a UK buyer than one in another country.

    As Delcampe has a very high percentage of (to us) foreign buyers given the very nature of its being, then, yes, I accept your argument that it will skew it more than say if it were a UK based website with a higher percentage of UK customers but that is where we are and we may have to accept a lower non-UK sales level, at least in the short term, as I can't see that the Royal Mail problems are not being replicated elsewhere.

    It's not good news but let's give it a go and see that happens

    Like many others, I'm probably in a somewhat better position selling both stamps and postcards (and to be honest, anything else that isn't bolted to the floor!) so most of my sales fall in to the 20g and 40g weight bands

    However, I have found that many European buyers (and some far-flung ones) will happily pay £1 or more postage to get a stamp I'm selling for 20p - it all depends if that's the particular item they need at the time

    Perhaps now is a good time to invest in better (i.e. more expensive) stock so the postage element is a lower proportion of the overall cost?

    Quantity-wise stamps outsell postcards anyway, and since I'll be doing my utmost to keep increases to a minimum I'm hopeful that the effect on my sales won't be too great, but time will tell

    Like many others, I'm probably in a somewhat better position selling both stamps and postcards (and to be honest, anything else that isn't bolted to the floor!) so most of my sales fall in to the 20g and 40g weight bands

    I agree with you also about better stock - perhaps it will serve a second purpose, as per another current thread on the Forum, to lose a lot of the cheap rubbish on (particularly) the stamps listings.

    Do you know, I never thought of that!

    Mind you, given the state of a lot of the offerings we're talking about, they probably don't sell much anyway so postage rates are irrelevant!
