    The stamp is of Ceylon and the overprint is a security device applied by the company, formed in Ceylon in 1868, to prevent the company's stamps being fraudulently used or stolen by employees. Probably done in-house or by a local printer.

    In the UK, similar devices in the form of perforated initials through the stamps, 'perfins' or company names printed on the face or reverse of the stamps were used.

    Would normally be seen to decrease the value of the stamp itself, but the are collected as they are.
