    I have been told that this stamp is possibly a (private) reprint. Can anyone enlighten me? How can I tell?

    Sorry, yes....almost certainly a fake or private reprint. About 99.9% of the Steamship or Barquitos issues are not originals.

    It is hard to state concisely how to completely identify the fakes & reprints but from your scan, just about everything looks wrong......the colour, the print size & font, the margins are much too wide, the picture itself looks rather crude compared to the original and looks like wrong paper too.

    There are 1 or 2 sites on the web specialising in 19th century forgeries that have pics of the real barquitos. Try klaseboer.com which has 2 pics on site for free or try another link to these stamps through your search engine
