    Yes - you are quite right - an "E" stamp does have a face value of 68p, the current rate for up to 20g to Europe. These stamps can also be used for postage in the UK and, conversely, a 1st Class NVI stamp (46p) or 2nd Class NVI stamp (36p) can be used towards postage abroad.

    With regard to the second point, if you have two 10½p stamps, the face value is 21p. Although the ½p coin went out of circulation many years ago, the ½p on stamps is still valid today.

    I checked this point at one stage (can't remember the source of the answer now!) and regularly use two x odd ½p values and never had any comeback.

    In full agreement with you about the "E" stamps. Basically, they represent the 20 gramme weight to Europe.

    As far as the half penny is concerned. Up until April last year, you could use 2 of them to make 1p.

    Although, I have not been able to find the relevant info on the Royal Mail website, I have been informed that halfpennies are now ignored, i.e. 2 x 12.5 stamps are worth 24p not 25p.

    I'll ask my source to put in his bit on this thread and hopefully a link to the relevant info on the RM website.

    I've used ½p stamps just in the last week (1st Class NVI + 11½p +10½p = 68p) to send to Europe. I've had positive feedback which suggests there is no problem.

    I'm afraid it's slightly more complicated than that - apparently Post Office counter staff have been told to ignore the ½p so if you hand in a letter at a Post Office it will be discounted, however Royal Mail letters, who actually process and deliver the mail, will allow the full face value! A typical example of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. I've been using ½p stamps on mail for years with no problems

    I regularly raid my stock of mint half-pence value stamps AND hand them over the counter with no problem at my local sub-post office; however, it may be a different story at the main branch as I have had problems with them in the past (and even our relief sub-postie won't work there, which says it all really!)

    I regularly raid my stock of mint half-pence value stamps AND hand them over the counter with no problem at my local sub-post office; however, it may be a different story at the main branch as I have had problems with them in the past (and even our relief sub-postie won't work there, which says it all really!)

    A sad sign of the times. With the Post Offices now being franchises the service varies greatly from one to the next. My local PO is fine; run by a lovely husband and wife couple. However, a nearby village has a sub-PO (part of the local store). I went in there a while ago, because I was driving past it to go somewhere. He refused to stamp and sign my COP, because I hadn't bought the stamps from him. He won't see me again, either in his PO or in his shop!

However, a nearby village has a sub-PO (part of the local store). I went in there a while ago, because I was driving past it to go somewhere. He refused to stamp and sign my COP, because I hadn't bought the stamps from him. He won't see me again, either in his PO or in his shop!

    I had a letter the other day where someone had used a mix of decimal and pre-decimal. Not legal since about 1971, I imagine. And counting 4d as 4p, which would be wrong anyway.
    The way standards and service are falling, you could probably start making your own stamps like we did as children, and use them too!

    The 1/2p coin was withdrawn, but never demonetised, so two stamps with a 1/2p on them still add up to 1p. However, you will always find some Post Office staff who will be happy to argue with you for hours.... :yes:

    Likewise with the "E" stamp. Many do not even remember this relatively brief period and will probably be on the phone for hours trying to find someone who can tell them what one is worth..... :cool:
