Yes, you are quite right. Some sellers are very careless (or perhaps do not know the difference between the 2 countries). Little that D can do unless there is a hawk-eyed moderator who will alter the listings.

On the other hand, matters are exacerbated by D using 2 names for the same country where names changed but the boundaries did not (eg Siam/Thailand, Cambodia/Kampuchea etc).

Also, of course the strange anomaly in British Commonwealth countries. Countries which are now self-governing have 2 listings before & after (GB Colonies + whichever area they are located). Countries that are not self-governing are not listed in GB colonies at all! Have I missed the logic here?
So, much tidying up to do D then sellers (and buyers) will nor be confused
    .
As at now I have noticed that sellers tend to ignore these arbitrary subdivisions and list where they wish. Their loss of course because the chances of their items being found are so much lower

    Happy New Year to you

Yes...I think that you are right.....1 country, 1 listing.. D seems to have got it right for French, German, Italian, Belgian & Dutch colonies but has made a complete muddle of GB/Commonwealth even though the "Empire" was by far the largest of its kind in modern times & the Commonwealth still is.

However, many territories had a different status to that used by the French & Germans..

Australia was never a British colony but became a Dominion in 1907. Even though the British monarchy remains, the Australia Act of 1986 removed the last vestiges of British governance

Similarly with Canada, except that it was a colony until 1867 (except for Newfoundland which was always a Dominion) . It is now a Dominion & retains British monarchy.....the Canada Act of 1982 removed all British governance.

So D trying to re-write history simply does not work!

Incidentally, Thailand/Siam is, I think, the only SE Asian country that was never a colony or protectorate of any other country It has always been independent but merely changed its name in 1939 or 1940.

And what about Philippines where I live (I am British as you might have guessed). Originally a colony of Spain till 1898, governed by USA till 1941, Japanese occupation till 1945, back to USA till 1946 then Independent republic. D just gave up & put everything under "Asia".....probably best place.

    Happy New Year
    Mike

My previous answer refers, I think. Either stop playing 'what if' with different countries and keep things as they are, or move former colonies and dominions into the country/continent areas they now occupy

To compound the problem, the name has changed also: no longer is it the 'British Commonwealth' but the 'Commonwealth of Nations', and yes, former non-colonial countries are eligible to join under certain conditions, an extension to the rule change which allowed India to remain a member even though they became a presidential republic. Similarly, the Republic of Ireland and also the original English settlements in America could apply for membership...

There's a good discussion of the Commonwealth on Wikipedia:

Yes, take for instance Sri Lanka - one sub-category for Ceylon (1857-1972) and one for Sri Lanka (1972-now), although we'd better include a category for 'Other' to accommodate the bright sparks who don't know or care about geopolitical history!

Likewise any country with a colonial past
