1967 Christmas FDC

    This is a simple question with answers that could go anywhere.....


    1967 was only the second time that the GPO had issued Christmas stamps. First and second class post did not yet exist (until 16.09.1968), but I believe that 3d was the concessionary domestic rate if you tucked the flap in instead of sealing it and 4d was the rate if you sealed. I have a 3d FDC where the flap was sealed and postage due was charged AND collected!

    Anyway, the 1967 set had two different issue dates. The 3d and 1s/6d were issued on 27/11/1967 whilst the 4d was issued on 18/1/1967 to allow for last posting dates for mail abroad.

    This means unfortunately that yours is not an FDC, being posted later, on the issue date for the other two stamps.

    I think that this may be the only time that a set had two different issue dates.

    Apart from stamps of the same designs later appearing in booklets, Mini-Sheets etc, another two GB sets that spring to mind that have different issue dates are the 1977 Queen's Silver Jubilee and the 1986 Christmas issues.

    Apart from stamps of the same designs later appearing in booklets, Mini-Sheets etc, another two GB sets that spring to mind that have different issue dates are the 1977 Queen's Silver Jubilee and the 1986 Christmas issues.

    Correct! I don't collect commemoratives after decimalisation, so I overlooked those two.

    For those who don't already know, the reasons for these split issues may be of interest.

    In the case of the Silver Jubilee issue, HM the Queen made a tour of the country and there were special postmarks available along the way. During the course of the tour there was the annual hike in postage rates. In order for the public to have access to a first class stamp throughout the tour, the Post Office issued another stamp, hence the 15/06/1977 appearance of the 9p.

    In the case of the 1986 Christmas stamps, in that year the Post Office offered THREE ways of buying discounted postage, for a period of 3 weeks only. There was the book of ten 13p stamps with star underprint, selling at 12p each. There was a 36 pack of the 13p stamps selling for £4.30 (a reduction of 38p) and finally the 13p Christmas stamp was issued with a face value of 12p. All three methods were available between 02/12/1986 and 24/12/1986.
