    The flag is that of the Republic which flew from 1912 to 1927 when the KMT replaced it with the flag that is now the flag of Taiwan.
    The stripes are one for each of the racial groups [Chinese. Mongol etc] who made up the population of the Republic. Copper coins of the period show another flag as well looking though composed of dumb-bells. That is the Army flag.
