I, also, fervently hope all is OK with you.

The central Visayas have been very badly hit by this storm. Many of my wife's relatives who live in the remoter parts of Cebu have been out of touch due to the disruption in communications. Fortunately word of mouth has indicated they are all OK - except for storm damage to houses etc.

It looks like your island was also badly hit - hopefully it is only communication problems keeping news of you and your families welfare at bay.

Do let us know if all is well with you when you get access again to the internet again. All the best.

My friends, I am overwhelmed with your concerns.

I hope that you do not mind if I just post 1 reply as there simply is so much to do here. My island practically adjoins Leyte and is only 70 miles away from Tacloban but it escaped the very worst devastation because it is surrounded by other islands rather than being direct on the Pacific Ocean.

The whole of my family are fine...

I am now in Cebu City to pass on messages to friends & relatives as there is no power, phone signal or internet in Biliran and matters will take months to improve.

I have seen much of the pics & videos put out by CNN and BBC. I have to say that the scale and horror of the devastation is well understated. Deaths will be well over the figures given out and displaced people are several millions.

Just imagine, my friends......this typhoon was 600 km wide (further than from Amsterdam to Paris) and wrecked everything in its path.

But thanks again......and for the help that USA, EEC & many other countries are providing to my new adopted country....God bless

I'm very glad to hear you and your family are all safe. The pictures we get in the UK of the devastation are really horrific and I'm sure are much worse to actually be there amongst it. Best wishes and hope the powers that be can get something sorted out to return to some sort of normality as soon as possible.

Yes my friend, I know.....my wife was in Bohol just before the typhoon doing relief work. My own island of Biliran will have no electricity for 2 months or so and the first relief aid of food etc is not expected to arrive until the middle of next week.

This is not the place to comment on the shambolic state of the relief effort by the Philippine government.......aid is needed fast so if anyone feels like contributing please do so.

Locally, .we have a volunteer relief effort for Tacloban, Ormoc & Biliran here in Cebu funded by friends and relatives locally worldwide (My wife is vice-chairman).

The first shipment leaves Cebu tomorrow and we wish to continue this daily for the time being.....we simply cannot rely on local or national officials who spend far too much time squabbling or involved in the "blame game" and little actual effort to help the homeless & sick

Direct contributions are always welcome in this urgent situation........just use my paypal account. Everything acknowledged and accounted for of course emmbersplace@collector.org

Benjamin.....delete this thread if you need to........but things are really getting desperate out here.

Ah, but a £ buys a bit more over there than it does here.

Something small from me too Mike - not much, but every little helps.

    Benjamin,

Is Sebastien in the office today? I have sent him an email asking permission/support to run a sale to raise funds for the Philippines and would like to know if he agrees to my suggestions?

Does that mean that you've seen my email? I by-passed you because I knew he would have to agree to something like that.

Hopefully I may get an answer on Monday.

Thank you Benjamin & thanks to the other forum users for your support and special thanks to those of you who have already given financial support.

As was mentioned, money goes further over here than in Europe......£5 will provide enough food and water to keep a family (usually 10 people or so) alive for 2 or 3 days......that;s just a few pennies per person. Remember too anyone reading this that a phenomenal 50% of the population here in the provinces are under the age of 13 and these kids are very vulnerable especially if their parents have died, are still missing or were injured.

Mainly's idea of a sale is excellent & I hope that Seb supports it or something like that. I n the meantime any donation, however small it might seem to you over in Europe or USA, amounts to mega-bucks over here.

And just a note of respect for the Filipinos living here in Cebu.........the volunteer relief group has been inundated with tiny cash gifts or just small food parcels etc from generous but poor Cebuano's . These guys have nothing and give everything.

    God bless

PS....Anyone speak decent French, German.Spanish, Italian, Dutch etc to translate my original appeal for the other forums? or is it fora?

Since we now use 'data' as a collective noun then 'forums' will do nicely; I don't think there are too many Latin-speakers here to trouble us...

Just a follow on to Embers message - every small donation has great value and will stretch an awful lot further than here.

My wife, who is Filipino, is actively arranging the shipment of aid and money to contacts in Cebu where she is originally from and still has family. Fortunately her family were not affected too much by the typhoon and its aftermath - mainly because they are well-off. As usual with these disasters it is those who have nothing to begin with who are the hardest hit. Our local Filipino community has already sent over £10,000 in donations and has arranged free shipping for food and clothing shipments to Cebu as a local company has donated free container space for the non perishable items given.

Again I emphasise even the smallest donation will have great value - and I wish Embers every success in his fund raising.
