    Not quite in the Arctic Circle, but definitely an autumnal feel to the evenings and very dewy mornings but still warm sunshine during the day. Apparently us northerners have been having better weather than the waterlogged south although since most of the water reservoirs are sited up here that not may be a good thing after all...

    Around here is one of the strongholds of our native Red Squirrels, so on reflection you'd better not send your furry critters over as wey've got enough problems dealing with imported Grey Squirrels

    Frankly, the idea of cow-sized furries skittering through the oak trees does not rest easy on the imagination - what if they start to emulate the Australian Drop-Bear and descend rapidly on unsuspecting tourists? Think of the litigation from the relatives!

    Better go, I've got another page of Australian 'roos to scan and list...

    Grey Squirrels are such a nuisance here a local restaurant has included them on its menu

    I haven't tried them yet, there's too many cows and sheep to get through first

    An interesting variant on McCheesy-whatever although I doubt the orange-haired clown will be offering them just yet!

    Catching the critters in the first instance may prove troublesome since the last government banned the (legal) ownership of firearms - the illegally-held ones were not handed in which seemed to come as a surprise to the politicians - so I'll have to dust down my trusty .22 air-rifle instead

    A predictable reaction from the Viva spokesperson about a 'needless cull' of grey squirrels; in fact the grey has almost wiped out our native red population, being bigger, more aggressive and carrying squirrel pox against which the reds have no immunity, so I think it is every citizen's duty to eat as many grey squirrels as they can to help protect the reds

    I think your opinion of grey's wiping out the red's is a bit misguided. It may be true as far as spreading squirrel specific diseases is concerned, but not as far as habitat is concerned. The red likes pine trees/forests, whereas the grey prefers deciduous (sp?) woods.

    As far as catching/shooting/killing the creatures for human consumption is concerned - why not? Most people don't think twice about a good fish & chips supper - the poor cod or haddock wasn't a farmed animal.
    We eat rabbits, deer, fish, pheasants etc., which are all wild animals. My butcher sells local rabbit and when he can lay his hands on a deer, venison.

    I think your opinion of grey's wiping out the red's is a bit misguided. It may be true as far as spreading squirrel specific diseases is concerned, but not as far as habitat is concerned. The red likes pine trees/forests, whereas the grey prefers deciduous (sp?) woods.

    As far as catching/shooting/killing the creatures for human consumption is concerned - why not? Most people don't think twice about a good fish & chips supper - the poor cod or haddock wasn't a farmed animal.

    A simplistic comment I know, and your note about the pox is correct, but the nett result is the same.

    I had the pleasure of watching a red sunning itself on a pile of pine logs in a plantation recently, while our nearby oak trees are infested with greys which drive my dog absolutely crackers 'cos they won't come down and be chased like rabbits

    Living in a recognised gastro-tourist area, we're well served with three butchers within just over a mile radius, with the two in Windermere about 100 yards apart. All are licensed game dealers and also sell produce from the local rare breeds farms and named farms in the area, although I think taking traceability down to the level of naming the actual animal may be taking things a tad too far. Daisyburger, anyone?

    Hope you're enjoying your sojourn in Devon - weather here still warm and sunny during the day but decidedly cool overnight although no need for the log fire yet

    The greys are so numerous here I don't think they face any treat at all. Somehow, I can't see the British population taking to eating squirrel even if one of the supermarkets is selling them.

    Now you've taken to telling fibs.:cool2:

    To be honest, we have had bright sunshine for the last 2 days, but lowish temperatures. It actually suits us, because we've been doing some serious gardening and I've been feeling quite hot in daytime. Tonight I've lit a log fire rather than a coalfire and it's good fun to burn one's own logs. We cut down a very old well established laurel hedge and managed to get some nice logs from it - produces a lovely smell.
