Postal verification

I am considering selling some items on Delcampe and thought that using the postal verification service would make people more comfortable with buying from me.

But when I went to the Postal verification page, I found the following text just above the button to request verification: "This address is correct and is not a PO Box."

I have all mail sent to a PO Box for security - I live in an apartment and the mail boxes here small, unlocked and on the outside of the building. And I would prefer not to advertise where a burglar can find my collection.

So why are PO Boxes excluded from postal verification? If I am able to receive the verification letter and enter the code on the validation page, doesn't that indicate that the PO Box is a good address?

In order for Delcampe (or any other organization) to establish that you really are who you claim to be, a real address is required.

Any crook (no offence meant and I don't mean you) can set up a POB.

I suggest you contact Delcampe and ask, if you can change your address back to the POBox after you've been verified. I've never needed to change my address since I signed up, so I don't know what happens, if you change it.

This is a real problem in countries where mail is only delivered to a P.O. Box.

Kuwait is an example of this - there are no mail deliveries - a person rents a P.O. box. I travel often to Rwanda and stay with a Rwandese friend but mail does not go to his address - he rents a P.O. box for mail as it is not delivered. When in Kigali I either use his P.O. box or use the Poste Restante facilities.

There are not the only countries where this is prevalent.

Here in the UK you cannot hide behind a P.O. box as the Post Office has to let you know who has opened the facility when you ask.

I had thought that the USPS also had a rule that anyone could ask for the name and address of the boxholder. But looking on the USPS website, I see that disclosure is restricted by the Privacy Act of 1974, So there needs to be some legal reason for the USPS to disclose my info, such as a subpoena.

So it would be a little easier for a crook to hide behind a PO Box. But note that to be verified, I need to pay 5.00 €. They payment method that I use will provide some verification of my identity. Unless, I suppose, I send cash (amazed that this is an option!).

All the other contributors to this thread are correct, I think.

I also live in a country where mail has to be collected from the local post office.

I found that the only time that buyers needed to know my address was when items had to be returned to me for refund (quite rare I hasten to add). I only accept online payments or Western Union so in all cases there is already direct contact with the buyer and they can be told any PO Box no. at that point.

So I had my real home address verified and this has so far worked well for many years.

I think that your home address can be hidden from other Delcampe members until they actually buy from you....possibly even afterwards (select the correct box on the store parameters page/information given during transaction).

    Good luck with your selling.....
