group offer

Not sure if I should post here or in the Sell on Delcampe forum, but here goes.

A buyer made me a group offer for 4 items. I could not find one of them and closed the sale.

I assumed that the group offer would automatically be cancelled.

However, it is still open, now only showing 3 items, but with the same price as the buyer offered for 4 items.

Needless to say I will not accept the offer as it stands, but this certainly is a flaw in the system.

Either the offer should have been cancelled or the offer price adjusted to reflect the % of price reduction they were offering in the first place.

Your suggestion makes sense, but I am not aware of any auction software that will actually do that. Also the bidder may be a bit "iffy" if the missing item was the one he/she actually wanted & the rest were just makeweight.

This has happened to me a couple of times. The first time, the missing item was a major part of the group offer so I declined the offer and emailed the bidder.

The other time, the missing item was of minimal value (50c out of $40), so I accepted the offer and offered the bidder a refund or an alternative.

    Both times all was well.....

Exactly spot on re the bidder being iffy....

As a seller I have no way of knowing if the bidder is much more interested in some of the items than in others until I make direct contact with them. And even than the bidder may not want to pay the same amount for 3 items instead of 4.

Hence, I would have expected the offer to be cancelled, the moment one of the items became unavailable for whatever reason. Someone could have bid/bought before the seller had a chance to accept the offer and could even be unaware that the original offer was for more items.

I'm not sure that the software could work this out. I see the group offer as basically a 'snapshot in time' ie, what things were like when the offer was made.

If say, you sold normally one of the 4 lots between the bidder making the offer and you accepting it, then I wouldn't think it likely that this would be recognised as the group offer has no 'standing' in the items available for sale or sold when the actual sale was made.

That is exactly my understanding. As the offer is merely a suggestion, it will not form part of the mainstream until the seller accepts/rejects etc or it expires. All changes have to be done manually by the seller or buyer.

I take back what I said earlier (to some extend).

I actually went to click on the offer to reject it. Once it took me to the next page it told me that the offer is no longer valid, because one of the items is missing.

However, it is still sitting there in my pending "lower bids received". It would be nice if it would be removed from there once an offer becomes invalid or is rejected.

Quite right but manual rejection or acceptance only works if you close the missing item after rejection rather than before.......if 1 item from the offer has been sold, the offer automatically lapses by default. The failed offer should automatically disappear after the time-limit expires.
