    This is a very complicated field, and if you want to study them, you really need a SG GB Concise catalogue, but as far as the lettering goes:

    MAIL - from ordinary Post Office counter sheets
    MBIL - from Business sheets of 100
    MCIL - from 'Custom' booklets, which incude special (commem.) stamps
    MMIL - from miniatire sheets
    MPIL - from Prestige booklet panes
    MRIL - from stamp rolls
    MSIL - from Machin booklets of 6
    MTIL - from Machin booklets of 12

    There are also other codes from Large 2nd & 1st class, the Diamond Jubillee definitives etc.

    Just to complicate things further, even for these, there is not necessarily one for each year!

    As I say, a modern Concise catlogue is essential

    Roayl Mail say they use it as a guide to what stamps people are actually using which helps them decide what people prefer and therefore what to print - more booklet stamps say, or ordinary sheet stamps bought at a post office. The year indicator tells them how old stamps are before they are actually used.

    The year is indicated on the stamp background within the word Royal, its position varying. This changes annually to the current year, however, for say sheet stamps, if there was no need to print a certain value in a certain year because there was sufficient stock in hand, then that year wouldn't exist, so a stamp last printed in say (20)18, and not again until (20)20, would never have a 19 code within it. Booklet stamps are generally produced annually, particularly the common 6 & 12 1st & 2nd class small size stamps.

    It is a field loved by specialists who can look for all sorts of difference, and as I say, an up to date GB Concise catalogue will show you what is available.
