Adhesive stamp question

    This is probably a dumb question. I've seen a pair of US stamps such as US SC 4404 - 4405 for sale that are of the adhesive type. MNH and OG.

    I don't understand how the adhesive stamps are sold to collectors individually or in pairs. If you peel them off the backing the adhesive is exposed. If you cut them with scissors, doesn't that damage the perforation?

    That's another wonder I have. I'm not planning to list US 4404-4405 but I've seen them for sale to collectors both here and on another site at a higher than post office price and I don't understand that when they are still available at the post office.

    The guillotine must be the way people separate them but I'm surprised that collectors find that acceptable. I guess there's no other way.

    Here's another little conundrum for you: Some GB self-adhesive stamps will soak off in water leaving the adhesive layer conveniently stuck to the envelope piece, whilst others defy any attempt to separate them; I intend to do some experimentation with various solvents to see what works and what doesn't when I can resist sniffing them for long enough...
    New-style first-class stamps have little die-cut 'tags' in the centre to prevent fraudulent re-use - the body of the stamp may soak off but the centre tags won't, so that's going to put the mockers on collecting fine used, isn't it?

    Here's another little conundrum for you: Some GB self-adhesive stamps will soak off in water leaving the adhesive layer conveniently stuck to the envelope piece, whilst others defy any attempt to separate them; I intend to do some experimentation with various solvents to see what works and what doesn't when I can resist sniffing them for long enough...

    Every now and again I find the little tags wants to stay behind when pulling the stamp of the piece of paper and I have to carefully stick the stamp back and start again from a different corner.
    And why do the 2nd large stamps not have them - is nobody going to try and use them fraudulently? :dunno:

    I had never really thought about it until I read this thread - but this "progress" is obviously going to be a problem/issue for stamp collectors.

    Perhaps, new standards will have to be designated for collecting the self-adhesives.

    I still can't figure how dealers are selling them MNH OG as singles or pairs. I look as closely as I can at the photos ..... some look good and some look like the perfs are cut off or rough.

    Personally I collect them on panes and I'm glad the US makes small panes for the sake of the $$$

    I'm not sure how other countries prepare their self-adhesive stamps, but here in the UK the stamps are die-cut with pretend perforations but the backing paper is rouletted so that individual stamps can be detached and sold singly

    I have one example of a US self-adhesive which looks as though the backing paper has been cut with scissors so presumably doesn't have the same rouletting
