    I just want to take the dog out and not come back soaking wet and plastered in mud!

    My sympathy is with all those caught up in the floods in Somerset. Fortunately I live on the Chiltern escarpment and a flood of biblical proportions would need to happen to hit me. The local forecast seems to suggest the Thames Valley is next on the 'hit' list.

    Oddly, although I live within sight of and a few minutes' walk of the lake we don't have flooding problems as we're just high enough to be clear and have no streams nearby to worry about, even when the lake is two metres above normal like it was a couple of years back

    Oddly, although I live within sight of and a few minutes' walk of the lake we don't have flooding problems as we're just high enough to be clear and have no streams nearby to worry about, even when the lake is two metres above normal like it was a couple of years back

    I'm halfway down a hill - a cluster of 4 houses and an old lean-to shed/barn (linhay). I have to wade through 3 cms of water to get to the linhay and a stream is running through it. Fortunately the house is dry. My next door neighbours are not so lucky though - they are very slightly lower than us and have water coming into their living room.

    After last year I didn't think it could possibly get any worse, but it's considerably worse now and new streams have sprung up all over the place.

    Maybe the time is coming to start building houses on stilts?
