Can anyone give a possible explanation what the lower cancellation says? Is it some private company (in Germany???) cancel... "Mittlere Minenwerfer Abtl."!!!???

    Hi,

To my opinion this is only a 'Briefstempel' ('Letter stamp'), indicating that this card was sent through or approved by the 'Mittlere Minenwerfer Abteilung III', a German unit in World War I (translated 'Middle Mine Thrower Division').

    Best regards,

Thanks for your answer. So, is it basically some sort of a military unit cancellation?

    Hi,

In my opinion it is a stamp that is put when the card is 'posted' in the military unit, so before it is actually sent.

Suppose I'm a soldier of that unit.
    1) I'm writing a card to my family at home.
    2) After that, I'm giving the card to the postal services of my unit. They put the stamp 'Briefstempel'.
    3) After that, the German 'Feldpost' sends the card to my family in Germany. They put the real post stamp (with the date etc.).

    Best regards,
