Émile BERNARD (1868-1941), peintre

Lettre autographe signée adressée à son amie Madame Duchâteau. 4 pages

petit in-4. 30 juin 1916. Avec enveloppe. Insolation de l’encre sur une partie

de la lettre qui demeure tout à fait lisible.

Très belle lettre témoignant d’une belle amitié avec une femme.

Le peintre tente de rassurer son amie – sa famille lui a été enlevé au-delà de

la mer - tout en partageant son anxiété : « … vous voilà livrée aux flots du

sort avec toutes les inquiétudes et solitudes en perspectives ».

« Moi je vous suis. Je me sens près de vous, je vous accompagne. La pièce

que je vous dédie va fort bien. J’ai écrit 3 actes pleins et j’ai déjà entamé le

4e. Je crois que cette satire dramatique ne vous déplaira pas. Vous y êtes le

fantôme, c’est-à-dire le retour du passé vivant parmi les morts modernes

».

Son amie va revoir Pauline qui s’occupe de l’appartement d’Émile Bernard

pendant son absence. Il lui demande de ne pas oublier son serin et « surtout

qu’elle ferme la fenêtre, car il pourrait prendre froid la nuit ». Il aurait bien

voulu qu’elle prenne « ce chanteur, [son] compagnon » chez elle. Il lui demande

de vérifier si l’eau ne coule pas de chez le voisin d’en haut. Il a déjà

subi des dégâts.

Il a fait une course à Tanlay qui a été un « enchantement ». Il a écrit plusieurs

poèmes ce jour-là. « Depuis la pluie m’a fait prisonnier mais j’ai écrit

un long long poème – René – que je vous ferai connaître ».

« Soyez quand même heureuse. Vous croyez et avez Dieu ». Il lui rappelle

qu’elle voit son fils échapper à cette guerre.
