"Pardonnez moi de répondre si tard à votre aimable invitation. J'étais en voyage quand votre lettre m' a été adressée : elle a courru après moi, à travers mes diverses pérégrinations, et ne m'arrive qu'aujourd'hui au fond des bois, où je suis en ce moment.
Veuillez, je vous prie, Monsieur, présenter à messieurs les Maîtres Répétiteurs avec mes excuses justifiées par mon absence, tous mes remerciements et mes regrets de ne pouvoir me trouveer ce soir au rendez-vous assigné. J'aurais été heureux de trinquer avec vous à l'avenir de votre association, au succès de ses revendications légitimes et à l'amélioration du sort de tous. J'ai toujours compris que l'Université devait former une grande et même famille étroitement unie par les liens d'une solidarité fraternelle..."
