Il est toujours marqué et daté 1943. Car il a été fabriqué uniquement pendant cette année. Les marquages du fourreau sont toujours sur la face avant. Les deux faces sont cousues et renforcées par l'adjonction de rivets et d'agrafes. Deux plaques de tôle parkérisées, maintenues par quatre rivets, maintiennent et renforcent le cuir au niveau de la pointe de la lame. Le cuir est également renforcé à hauteur de la gorge par huit agrafes verticales. Ce fourreau en cuir équipait principalement les troupes aéroportées.

Le couteau USM3 Trench Kniffe, aussi appelé Fighting Kniffe, entre en service en mars 1943. Initialement, les Américains souhaitent le distribuer à tous les soldats n’étant pas dotés de baïonnettes (notamment ceux armés du pistolet-mitrailleur Thompson et de la carabine USM1), mais ils équipent en premier lieu les unités susceptibles d’être confrontées aux combats de corps à corps comme les troupes aéroportées et les Rangers.

Les couteaux sont livrés avec un fourreau modèle M6 en cuir riveté qui peut être accroché à un ceinturon ou directement au niveau du mollet. Les parachutistes prennent l’habitude de le placer le long de leur brodequin afin de pouvoir s’en servir rapidement après le saut.

La poignée est réalisée en cuir.

La lame à contre tranchant est en acier phosphatée
