I am in the UK, so my situation is slightly different.
Depending on how many items I am shipping I use either a board backed envelope or a bubble envelope. I purchase both in bulk online, which works out at a quarter of the price of buying in the highstreet.
Royal Mail postage charges can be viewed online or you can obtain a leaflet with their prices. I have a good pair of kitchen scales (originally bought for use in the kitchen, but nowadays it sees more use weighing parcels!!). I put stamps on everything at home, but I will always take all items to the post office in order to obtain a proof of posting or in the case of more expensive items, to use a "signed for" delivery method.
I've adopted the practice of charging the cost of the stamps +50p. The 50p pays for my packaging material, petrol and depending on the size of the payment some or all of my Paypal fees.

A good tip for UK sellers is to buy 1st, 2nd, 1st large and 2nd large stamps at the end of March, just before the annual increase. You can use them within the UK "as is" and for overseas "top them up" with the odd 2, 5, 10 or 20p.
I spent just under £300 this year, which was a saving of nearly £50.
