The Colonia Güell is a small industrial colony located in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Cervelló (Barcelona). It is considered one of the references for studying the architecture of Antoni Gaudí and is also one of the most important modernist complexes and tourist attractions in Catalonia.
Unlike the vast majority of industrial colonies in Catalonia, Eusebio Güell sought social improvements for the workers and applied his status as a patron of culture. Thus, he provided the Colonia Güell with cultural and religious facilities, and incorporated the modernist movement into the new buildings. Particularly noteworthy is the church designed by Antoni Gaudí himself, unfinished but laying the foundations for what would become the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
Due to the heritage wealth of the complex, in 1991 the Colonia Güell was declared a Site of Cultural Interest and the protection of the most important buildings was established, as well as the general characteristics of the building.
History
It began to take shape in 1890 on the initiative of the businessman Eusebio Güell on his Can Soler de la Torre estate, where he moved the textile industry he had located in Sants (Barcelona). The interest in getting away from the social conflicts present in the city meant that Güell's new textile industry - equipped with the most modern technology of the time - was planned within the framework of an industrial colony with the workers' houses next to the factory, integrated into the same property. Even today it constitutes an urban nucleus with its own personality, although its social and economic life is no longer supervised by the company.
The workers' colony project devised by Güell had a hospital, inn, schools, shops, theatres, cooperative and chapel, in addition to the factories and the workers' houses. Gaudí was in charge of the planimetry of the complex, for which he counted on the collaboration of his assistants Francisco Berenguer, Juan Rubió and José Canaleta. He was personally in charge of the design of the church, of which only the crypt was built, since upon the death of Count Güell in 1918 his sons abandoned the project.
The rest of the buildings were built by Gaudí's collaborators: Francesc Berenguer built the Cooperative (with Joan Rubió, 1900) and the School (with his son Francesc Berenguer i Bellvehí, (1912-1917); Joan Rubió built various private houses, such as Ca l'Ordal (1894) and Ca l'Espinal (1900); Francesc Berenguer also built the Sant Lluís Cultural Centre (1915-1917) and the Parish House (1917).
The trade union movement and workers' demands also reached the Colonia. With the start of the Civil War in 1936, the factory was collectivised and managed by its workers. After the war, it was returned to the Güell family, who sold it to the Bertrand Serra family in 1945.
In the following years, the Colonia maintained its industrial production and the character of an urban centre clearly differentiated from the town of Santa Coloma. The factory was built in Cervelló. The latter grew until it surpassed the population of the Colonia, towards the sixties.
The factory closed in 1973 in the context of a general crisis in the textile sector, producing a strong social impact on the colony. In the following years, the property was sold: the factory in fractions, to various companies; the houses, to its inhabitants and the equipment and surrounding land, to public institutions.
In 2000, the restoration work of the industrial site began to convert it into a business park with capacity to house up to 6,000 employees.1 Óscar Tusquets collaborated on the project, an architect who also participated in projects such as the extension of the Faculty of Medicine of Barcelona and the remodeling of the Palace of Catalan Music.2 Currently, the restoration work on the Filatures and Tint Vell building has been completed and companies such as F. Iniciativas, Sodexo, and Adding Plus are housed in their offices.
