Jean-Gabriel Tarde (1843-1904), sociologue et criminologue français, précurseur de la psychologie sociale.

Lettre autographe signée, Paris, 8 décembre 1903, 1 p in 8.

Tarde voit la société comme un réseau d’imitations entre individus plutôt qu’un ensemble de structures impersonnelles. Sa pensée met l’accent sur la créativité individuelle, la diffusion des innovations et l’importance des interactions microsociales dans le changement social. Il rejette en effet la théorie de l'origine physique de la criminalité, lui préférant l'aspect sociologique et psychologique. Ses interprétations détonnent avec le darwinisme social ambiant, et son élection à la chaire de philosophie moderne du Collège de France, lui offrent une notoriété égale celle d'Émile Durkheim.
