Am 28. Mai 2025 erlebte die Schweiz eine nie dagewesene Naturkatastrophe. Das Dorf Blatten und der Weiler Ried im Lötschental wurden durch eine Schutt- und Eislawine fast vollständig zerstört. Die meisten der rund 300 Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner haben damit alles verloren. Der Schutthaufen auf dem verschütteten Bergdorf Blatten in ist nach Schätzungen teils bis zu 100 Meter hoch-
Am 28. Mai 2025 brach ein grosser Teil des Birchgletschers unter der zusätzlichen Belastung von rund neun Millionen Tonnen Bergsturzmaterial des Kleinen Nesthornes (3342 m ü. M.) ab. Die dadurch ausgelöste Schutt- und Eislawine verschüttete rund 90 Prozent des Dorfes Blatten.
Mit dem Kauf einer Briefmarke «Blatten – Lötschental» der Schweizer Post werden direkt Menschen in Not unterstützt. Der Zuschlag von 5.00 trägt dazu bei, akute Notlagen im Dorf Blatten zu lindern. Das Schweizerische Rote Kreuz verwaltet die Spendengelder und sorgt dafür, dass die Hilfe genau dort ankommt, wo sie gebraucht wird. Die Briefmarke hat einen Frankaturwert von Fr. 1.20 und beinhaltet eine Solidaritätsbeitrag von 5 Schweizer Franken.

Le village de Blatten et le hameau de Ried, dans la vallée du Lötschental, ont été presque entièrement détruits par une avalanche de débris et de glace. La plupart des quelque 300 habitants ont tout perdu. On estime que l'amas de débris dans le village de montagne enseveli de Blatten atteint jusqu'à 100 mètres de haut par endroits.
Le 28 mai 2025, une grande partie du glacier du Bouleau s'est effondrée sous la charge supplémentaire d'environ neuf millions de tonnes de débris provenant du glissement de terrain du Kleiner Nesthorn (3 342 m d'altitude). L'avalanche de débris et de glace qui en a résulté a enseveli environ 90 % du village de Blatten.

On May 28, 2025, Switzerland experienced an unprecedented natural disaster. The village of Blatten and the hamlet of Ried in the Lötschental valley were almost completely destroyed by a debris and ice avalanche. Most of the approximately 300 residents lost everything. The pile of debris in the buried mountain village of Blatten is estimated to be up to 100 meters high in places.
On May 28, 2025, a large portion of the Birch Glacier collapsed under the additional load of approximately nine million tons of landslide debris from the Kleiner Nesthorn (3,342 m above sea level). The resulting debris and ice avalanche buried approximately 90 percent of the village of Blatten.
