It is being reported today that Royal Mail is unable to send any letters or parcels out of the UK to other destinations because it has suffered from a 'cyber incident'.
It is advising customers not to send anything until the problem is fixed.

Being cynical I wonder if the 'cyber incident' is the huge backlog of strike mail that needs to be cleared.

I am getting an awful lot of non received claims from last year and I know there are stacks of unsorted mail from around the Christmas period still languishing in my local sorting office that need to be dealt with

Saying that though they have been fairly rapid with my recent mail that has been arriving quickly at destination

I posted a package on 28th NOVEMBER at a local PO. It was delivered to address in USA on 6th December. I have three packages "in transit" to Europe since 28th & 29th Dec. No sign yet!
Royal Mails ills are hardly the sole responsibility of an isolated "cyber incident"!!

Everything seemed to go reasonably well until about 10th December after which it all seemed to fall down. Like Wycombe I have had a number of people claiming non-arrival, though I’ve had a few feedback in the last couple of days which would suggest they’re making some progress in the backlog

Equally I regret if my comment came over harshly. My purpose was to quickly advise UK sellers that there could be problems with mail leaving here, we’ve had a lot of that recently with postal service workers strikes, and posted the message without considering other non UK readers.

Let’s hope it can be resolved quickly

I have messaged all my overseas customers explaining the situation and perhaps Naïvely saying "As no doubt you will have seen on your News Networks"
2 American buyers have both replied that nothing has been reported on their news.
If Someone Sneezes in Washington we have multiple news reports every hour for 2 days about it And if a minor Celeb in an obscure American Sitcom Should pass away the BBC treat it as a day of mourning (Sometimes for a week)

Yes, US is particularly bad. I know from some buyers that it has been reported in Germany & France, at the very least, so there is some realisation that their orders may not be arriving imminently

My local post office is refusing international mail, it’s not a hoax but it has meant I have had to issue refunds.

I've messaged all my customers and, so far, all have been OK with it, but would issue a refund if someone asked. Is a, presumably immediate, refund necessary?

As of 7 pm tonight, Royal Mail is accepting letters that do not need a customs form.

Yes, just seen that myself, Marianne, good to get orders moving again

Having had some feedback in the last week, would I be overly cynical in thinking RM used this to diminish the backlog from the pre Christmas strikes???

Two Cynics on the same thread!

My local post office never stopped accepting overseas ordinary, tracked or signed for mail during this period. They did refuse any kind of parcel mail for overseas destinations. Some of the letters sent have actually reached their destinations whilst I am still waiting for pre-Christmas stuff to arrive.

The grilling of Royal Mails CEO by a Parliamentary committee was interesting where a document was waved around showing that letter mail was 4th in their delivery priorities which might explain some of the non deliveries so far.

    Cynic absolutely!

It’s obvious deliveries to Europe and beyond did continue during the last week or so when allegedly they were unable to do any such thing. I am unaware of any reason why an ordinary airmail letter to a non UK destination should have been held up given that there is no ‘system based’ sorting or processing required.

On a positive note, I got feedback today, and a message from a buyer of 6 December and posting date of the 7th. Interestingly he said the letter was actually franked on the 7th at the local mail centre which means it’s been sitting in a bag somewhere for the last 6 weeks or so, only to be sent, in this case to Germany, during a period when, allegedly, they couldn’t process such mail
