I don't offer Bank Transfer as a method of payment but have a buyer who wants to pay that way. Does the buyer pay the bank charges and is the seller subject to any charges?

    A good description by baltija!

A lot of EU customers do not like Paypal and they prefer to use bank transfer to pay. For you it means no Paypal fees and you should get the complete invoice payment. But you must ensure the payment is made in Sterling otherwise you will lose money in currency exchange fees.

Also banks do not (at least mine does not) let you know when such a payment is received. I usually receive a letter a few weeks after receipt unless I regularly check my account.

I f you do accept this method of payment you will save money!

I made the change to allow bank transfers but might be regretting it. The customer who wanted me to make the change claims to have sent the correct amount but a lesser amount has appeared on my bank statement! Trying to sort it out!!!

Before accepting this method of payment you should check whether your bank charges or not.

UK banks vary considerably in what they do or do not charge for. My bank does not charge for accepting foreign credits so long as they are in Sterling. If not you will likely get clobbered by foreign exchange fees.

Now we have left the EU it is unlikely UK banks will alter their fees to the benefit of customers - more likely those with current free charges will start charging.

A shame really if this does happen as bank transfer from European customers was cheap, quick and pretty painless. To Eu customers this payment method is, as far as I know, free. Yet if I want to pay this way or make a refund I get charged £15!

I have always used IBAN Transfers to pay in Euros or other currencies when sending money abroad. I do this online via my bank and it costs me nothing and, for most sellers, it appears to cost them nothing to receive such payments - provided they are made in their home currency. Only one seller in France has reported bank charges on these payments from myself, otherwise it has enabled seamless transactions. Additionally, the currency conversion rates that I get from my bank are far better than those used by third parties such as PayPal. What’s the problem?

It depends on the Bank you use as to what charges you incur in sending and receiving foreign transfers.

If you bank with the 'wrong' people you well get hammered. Most UK banks were being forced through EU regulation to have the same sort of transfer system enjoyed by EU members but this move abruptly ended when we left the EU and its regulatory umbrella. I do (did) a lot of business with the Irish Republic and the only way I could make a bank transfer cost me £25 per transaction. My bank offered no other way of paying my suppliers so in the end I simply paid using Western Union at a cost of £4 for immediate cash transfer.

My bank does currently not charge me anything for foreign credits so long as they are in Sterling. As soon as they start charging I will stop accepting this method of payment or move my account to someone else who does not..
