I fully agree with you, although I must say that my descriptions are very minimal, but they cover the condition of each item and the questions I used to get asked most frequently.

I should think that in many cases the title and scans should be sufficient information for a buyer. It is pretty pointless wasting time writing what is obviously clear from both! Personally I would pay greater attention to any returns policy in case of a problem and only pay using a method where I can get my money back. Very many sellers here on Delcampe pay little heed to the law regarding Distance Selling Regulations and some listings are blatantly illegal in their terms and conditions.

    Note I did say:

"I should think that in many cases the title and scans should be sufficient information for a buyer. It is pretty pointless wasting time writing what is obviously clear from both!"

So you can see I was not referring to everything. Besides which you have the facility to contact any seller to ask for clarification, better scans etc. for any item you have an interest in.

If the seller has no returns policy and the item is not as described then you are stuffed if you buy from him and things go wrong. I suggest you only buy from those who accept a credit card or Paypal where you have recourse to a chargeback if things go wrong or pay cash on collection. If you purchase otherwise then you will only have yourself to blame if things go wrong as you will have purchased knowing this.

Likewise, publisher details and date of use are there in my listings, also a general condition statement and type of card - real photo, photogravure or phototype (collotype) - as this can give some indication of approximate age in the case of unused cards

When buying I have asked these questions of sellers many times, but rarely get an answer

One needs to remember many sellers both here and on other sites are 'hobby' sellers where it matters little if the items sells or not so you are not going to get any customer service as they don't care one way or another.

Then you also get the buyers/bidders who do your head in asking questions that are already clearly answered - is the item used? when it is listed as used and clearly postmarked; do you accept Paypal or whatever? When you clearly indicate all payment methods etc etc.

I have even had questions like - What country is this from? When the item is titled with the country and listed in the correct category. These things happen on all auction sites and are not peculiar to Delcampe.

Ah yes, many times I have resisted the temptation to respond with "Read the ********* description!", but smile sweetly (well, grimace actually) and give the info they have requested

At the end of the day customer service costs nothing yet is priceless, and you never know if you're dealing with a complete novice, a time-waster, or someone who really needs their shoes marking 'L' and 'R'

You have the choice to ask the seller for the details you want. If the seller could not be bothered to reply then don't buy.

I doubt there is any feasible way for any auction site to stipulate how items descriptions are written and then to check they are correct. This information is very subjective - what is important to you is probably not to others and vice versa. On most auction sites it is not even compulsory to have a picture! For Delcampe or any other auction site what you ask is impossible to enforce. Also you do need to remember any fees the auction site receives it receives from the seller not the buyer so no site is going to bite the hand that feeds it.

But as I also stated this does not apply to ALL!

I can appreciate your point but no one is going to try to implement something that is unenforceable. You as the buyer have the power - if you have the money to buy - to change the sellers attitude in relation to what information they impart. After all they will not sell to you unless they give the information you seek. If they cannot be bothered to give the information then you are daft to buy 'blind'. - and you need to make it clear that you will only contemplate buying once you have the information you want.

In fact I have just had a question regarding a phonecard I have listed - which I have responded to politely with the information the buyer wanted and he has since purchased that card and about 30 others. Even though some of the questions I get I think are facile and stupid (when they concern information given in the title) I do always answer them.
