Multiple and Miscategorised Listings

As a new member of the Delcampe community, I found two aspects of the listings a deterrent to buying.

    1. When browsing certain categories I have found up to 20 seperate individual listings for the same stamp by the same seller. This clutters up the categories and discourages browsing.

    2. There are a lot of miscategorised listings which have the same effect. One particularly bad case I have found is in Spain - Collections. There are many many listings of single stamps in this category.

As a potential buyer I find it tedious to plough through screen after screen of inappropriate listings. As a potential new seller I am worried that my sales will be lost in the plethora of these listings. From Delcampe's point of view I am sure that they are losing potential revenue from the reduced sales.

I'm not sure what the solution is but I hope someone can come up with one.

Forum thread: POSITIVE SUGGESTIONS near the bottom of the thread lists

Miscategorised items is a perennial problem and as a Moderator I spend many evenings trying to tidy everything up but it's like shovelling water - the darn stuff just fills up behind you again

I don't know whether sellers are truly so ignorant of their hobby or just downright lazy, but I can't think of any way to prevent it other than abandoning categories altogether - and what fun THAT would be!

The option is in place to "report an item" on every single listing. If you click on the "report an item", you can contact the seller to let them know that there is something wrong with their listing (wrong category, missing image, wrong image, etc).

As far as multiple listings is concerned, some sellers give each item a unique stock number, therefore it should be very ease to find the correct item. Furthermore, with used items, there are no "two the same"; in the case of stamps they would probably have parts of completely different postmarks on them; in my field, postcards, they will have been sent to different people and have different messages/stamps/postmarks on the back or the condition of the item is different. I have a few "duplicates" in my store, but I would not be able to list them as a "multiple item sale" - although the actual postcards may be exactly the same, their condition, recipient, sender are different.

Every used stamp is unique - the cancellation will be different or in a different place, and of course some will be heavier or smudgier than others; the buyer should check the received stamp against the item's image and if it is different should complain both to the seller and to Delcampe, as it is clear evidence of mis-selling

Each of my sales has an internal code # assigned to it, so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle. 95% of my sales items are used, so the cancel is usually spot on and reconcilable.

Nope! I use stock sheets and since they go in linearly, it's an easy task to keep track of them.

With used stamps it's almost a 100% breeze, with a few look a likes.

With mint stamps, I make sure they are in order and don't move them.

On the stock pages, I mark the beginning of each "set" of scanned sheets. Within this batch there's probably about 35-40 pages. So, all I need to do is make sure that the scanned page number is solid. Set 1, Page 1, Page 2...

I have 2 complete sets of pages. The Vario type for scanning and the manila for storage later. They get moved from one to the other so I can re-use the Vario type pages. These go into sequential binders. It may seem like a lot of work, but it isn't.

In my listings, that's one of only a few things that changes from item to item. I may post 10 of the same item, but they'll get numbers like Stamp0010-01-01, Stamp0010-01-02, etc...

So, when I sell Stamp0010-01-12 it's from set 10, page 1, stamp 12. Using delcampe's images as a reference, they match up quickly.

At first it was a little tough getting back into it, but now it's fairly easy.

It can be solved without any problem.
    An unpopular but effective.
A minimum of 5 Cents for a sold item.
The Delcampe moderator can do it.
Please add your comments about my suggestion.

Problems also arise in that many of the stamps/sets in topical categories I would list under the country concerned - some of them have only a tenuous link with the person concerned

Another example of how it would be useful to list in two categories, even if we have to pay for the second one?

    I've just joined the ranks.

I don't know anything about stamps, so I will stay well clear.

However, the postcards are just as bad; there are a number of sellers who just dump everything in "other & unclassified" In my first 10 days I've moved over 5000 cards from England>other& unclassified, only to get back to it one morning to discover that one seller had listed about 2000 new cards in that category - quite a few even have the county name in the title. This is sheer laziness and I feel that the Delcampe team should intervene here.

We are all human and we can all make mistakes (including me - I've moved one of my own cards in the process of tidying up the categories) and that is what the moderators should be there for - to pick up on mistakes or cases where a foreign seller genuinely can't find the correct category, not to do the categorizing for the big sellers who can't be bothered. If scview can get it right with all of his listings, so should everyone else.
