How is it possible for an item to be sold for a lower price today without my permission. buyer made a lower offer and before I had seen the offer aand acted on it, he had bought it for his lower offer. This should not happen.

I suggest that you check your offer settings. The system does allow automatic acceptance of lower offers provided that the offer is within the range that you allow unless you disallow the automatic acceptance function.
You will probably find that the automatic acceptance box has been checked....jusy uncheck it and all will be well for the future (its in "my settings")
